2023 Arlington Million Stakes Handicapping
Although Churchill Downs Incorporated, the owner of Arlington Park near Chicago, decided to close the track, they did decide to keep some of the signature races and run them at different CDI facilities.
This weekend one of those lesser known tracks gets time in the spotlight, as Virginia’s Colonial Downs hosts the (G1) Arlington Million, which for decades was the key summer race at the old Arlington track.
Open to horses age three and older, the race is run at 1 1/4 miles on the Colonial turf course. The race has drawn a very balanced field of 11 starters, and offers excellent betting value with no horse listed at lower than 7-2 in the morning line odds.
Odds listed here are provided by the Colonial Downs track oddsmaker.
2023 Arlington Million Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Atone Race Odds: 7-2
A Grade 1 winner three starts back at Gulfstream Park, Atone has been out of the money in his last two, although last out he was only a length back when finishing fifth in the )G3) Dinner Party Stakes at Pimlico.
In that one he led out of the gate and took the field all the way until bing passed late, and it’s expected that once again he’ll be showing early speed. The question to be answered is if he can carry that speed for the full 1 1/4 miles distance, which is 1/8th longer than he has ever run before.
Michael Maker is the trainer, Kendrick Carmouch will ride.
2023 Arlington Million Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Rockemperor Race Odds: 5-1
One that has run at the distance a total of 10 times is Rockemperor, including his last start in the (G1) Manhattan Stakes in June. Although he only has 1 win in those efforts, he has finished the money five other times, so clearly distance is not a problem.
What is a bit of a concern is whether now at age seven this multiple graded-stakes winner has lost a step, after finishing out of the money in his last four starts. While he didn’t get the cleanest trip in the Manhattan, the fact is he ran ninth in that race against several he’ll face again here.
Chad Brown trains, and John Velazquez will be in the saddle.
Catnip Race Odds: 8-1
A relative rookie in this field with only eight lifetime starts, Catnip has shown solid progression in his career during that time, steadily moving up the racing ranks as well as steadily improving on his speed figures.
Two back he scored his first graded-stakes win by taking the (G3) Monmouth Stakes, and then moved up to Grade 1 company in the United Nations Stakes where he led into the stretch and was passed late, finishing second by 1 1/2 lengths. It should be noted that he’s one of only two in the field with a start and win at the track.
Michael Stidham trains, Brian Hernandez Jr. will be in the irons.
Adhamo Race Odds: 10-1
Irish-bred Adhamo began his career in France where he was a Group 3 winner before shipping over to race in the US to start the 2022 season.
The move worked very well at first, as he ran second or third in his first three US races – two of those at the Grade 1 level – before scoring a win in the (G1) United Nations Stakes at Monmouth last July. He performed poorly in his next two starts, however, and hasn’t started a race since running sixth in the (G1) Turf Classic last October.
He’s another Chad Brown trainee. Flavien Prat picks up the mount.
Here’s My 2023 Arlington Million Stakes Free Pick.
One of the most notable things about this race on paper is that only one of the 11 entries comes into it off a win – and that’s 20-1 long shot Win for the Money who is taking a huge step up in class – and that makes it very hard to handicap on form. In fact, between them the top two in the ML odds are have failed to hit the board in their last six starts combined.
That being said, I think there’s lots of value in looking elsewhere, and my Win bet is going to Adhamo. While I’m usually going to shy away from betting a horse that hasn’t raced in more than nine months, he has been training lights out leading up to this.
And when you consider the fact that prior to going on the shelf he made five consecutive starts at the Grade 1 level, if he’s fit enough he has the back class to win.
