Phil Longo’s Bearkats enter at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in CUSA. They’ve lost two straight and are 1-1 at home.
Western Kentucky arrives after a convincing home victory. Sam Houston returns from a miserable road outing. Both coaches have plenty to address before kickoff.

Bearkats Stats
Sam Houston has scored 114 points through five games, averaging 22.8. The Bearkats have generated 1,370 passing yards but only 510 rushing yards. That imbalance puts plenty of responsibility on their receivers.
Defensively, Sam Houston has surrendered 131 points, or 26.2 per game. The Bearkats have recorded 10 sacks, five interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
At least somebody’s making life difficult for opposing offenses.
Sam Houston can move the football through the air, but its running attack needs to offer more support.
Alton McCaskill has rushed for 201 yards and one TD. He’s been the leading option in a backfield searching for greater production.
Grady O’Neill has contributed 255 receiving yards. The Bearkats need their receivers to generate yards after the catch. That would take some pressure off the offensive line.
Max Whisner remains a reported injury concern, while Brock Kuhl has been listed out.
Hilltoppers Stats
Western Kentucky has scored 133 points through six games, averaging 22.2. The Hilltoppers have rushed for 808 yards and thrown for 1,391. Their offensive production has fluctuated considerably.
Defensively, Western Kentucky has allowed 211 points, or 35.2 per game. Opponents have averaged six yards per rushing attempt.
That’s not a statistic the defensive coordinator frames for his office.
Ajay Allen leads the rushing attack with 321 yards and four TD’s. He’s provided a useful option when the Hilltoppers establish their ground game.
Jonathan Stafford Jr. has contributed more than 300 receiving yards. His ability to stretch the field gives Western Kentucky another offensive weapon. The Hilltoppers need those gains to translate into sustained scoring drives.
Jaylen Wester and K.D. Hutchinson have been reported with injury concerns, leaving their availability uncertain.
Hilltoppers vs. Bearkats QB Matchup
Landyn Locke leads Sam Houston with 1,306 passing yards, 11 TD’s and three interceptions. He’s attempted 175 passes in five games. His production has been the foundation of the Bearkats’ offense.
Locke can stretch defenses vertically when his protection holds up. His challenge is keeping drives productive against pressure.
Even a strong passing arm needs time to work.
Brett Holloway has seen limited action behind Locke. He’s thrown one TD and one interception in relief appearances. The Bearkats have largely depended on Locke to direct the passing attack.
Western Kentucky has used Rodney Tisdale Jr. and Brock Glenn this season. Tisdale has thrown for 852 yards, four TD’s and two interceptions.
The Hilltoppers haven’t relied exclusively on one passer.
Glenn has thrown for 536 yards with four TD’s and two interceptions. He handled most of the passing work against Missouri State. That gives Western Kentucky another experienced option entering Wednesday.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Locke has been Sam Houston’s primary passing threat. Western Kentucky has divided its QB workload, with Glenn taking the larger role most recently.
Sam Houston must protect its passer against pressure. Western Kentucky needs clean execution regardless of who takes the snaps. Neither offense benefits from constantly changing its approach.
That makes preparation especially important for both coaching staffs.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs. Sam Houston Bearkats bottom line: Sam Houston has a settled passing leader, while Western Kentucky must get dependable execution from its available QB options.

- Sam Houston is 9-5 against the spread in their last 14 home games.

Hilltoppers Bearkats Free Pick: Under 53
Here is my Hilltoppers Bearkats free pick: I’m betting Under 53. Western Kentucky hasn’t won a road game, and Sam Houston hasn’t exactly made scoring look effortless. I’m not expecting either offense to become a well-oiled machine overnight.
The Hilltoppers have allowed plenty of points, which makes this total tempting to chase Over.
But Sam Houston’s ground game hasn’t consistently controlled possessions, and that matters when you’re asking for 54 points.
Somebody has to finish those drives.
I’m betting these teams waste more scoring opportunities than the total can comfortably absorb.
Short fields are my biggest concern because both defenses can force turnovers. Still, a takeaway doesn’t automatically mean seven points. I’ve watched enough college football to know that first-and-goal can turn into a FG and three very creative excuses. Western Kentucky can contribute to the scoring, but its road offense has been unreliable. Sam Houston needs sustained execution rather than one explosive play. That’s a demanding assignment for both sidelines.
I’ll call it Sam Houston 24-20. If this turns into a track meet, I’ll have misread it, but I’m not paying for fireworks from two offenses still looking for the matches.
Under 53 is my play, and boring football is fine with me.
