Horned Frogs Stats
TCU has scored 144 points through six games, averaging 24 per contest. The Horned Frogs have generated 1,694 passing yards and 660 rushing yards. Their offense has relied much more heavily on throwing the football than establishing a consistent ground attack.
Jeremy Payne leads the rushing attack with 429 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Ed Small has contributed 494 yards and two scores.
Both have been important contributors to TCU’s offense.
Defensively, the Horned Frogs have allowed 73 points, an average of 12.2 per game. TCU has recorded 14 sacks, three interceptions and five fumble recoveries. That production has helped compensate for an offense that hasn’t consistently finished drives.
TCU’s defense has been particularly effective at limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities.
Dykes needs that group to remain aggressive against an opponent capable of producing points in bunches.
There isn’t much room for defensive generosity in this matchup.
Mountaineers Stats
West Virginia has scored 263 points through seven games, averaging 37.6 per contest. The Mountaineers have rushed for 1,913 yards and added 1,573 through the air. Rodriguez has built an offense that can move the football without relying entirely on its passing game.
Cam Cook leads the rushing attack with 833 yards and seven touchdowns. Receiver DJ Epps has added 556 yards and five scores on 22 receptions.
Both give West Virginia opportunities to generate explosive gains.
West Virginia has the offensive firepower to compete, but its defense remains a serious liability.
The Mountaineers have allowed 238 points, an average of 34 per game. Their defense has recorded 15 sacks and four interceptions. Those disruptive plays haven’t prevented opponents from moving the ball consistently.
West Virginia has struggled particularly against explosive passing attacks and long scoring drives. That places additional pressure on its offense to maintain production throughout the game.
Rodriguez needs his defense to deliver more timely stops.
Mountaineers vs. Horned Frogs QB Matchup
Jaden Craig directs TCU’s passing attack and has played in all six games this season. He has completed 129 of 193 passes for 1,694 yards. Craig has thrown 10 touchdowns and five interceptions while averaging 282.3 passing yards per game.
Craig has demonstrated an ability to attack defenses downfield. His arm gives TCU opportunities to create big plays even when the rushing attack struggles.
West Virginia’s secondary cannot afford repeated coverage mistakes.
Craig’s five interceptions highlight an area where TCU needs greater consistency. He has occasionally forced throws when facing pressure. Better protection would help the Horned Frogs avoid unnecessary turnovers.
TCU depends heavily on Craig to keep its offense moving. West Virginia will try to disrupt his timing without leaving receivers open downfield.
That balance will be important for the Mountaineers.
Michael Hawkins Jr. leads West Virginia’s offense and has thrown for 1,519 yards through seven games. He has produced 10 touchdown passes against one interception. Hawkins has generally protected the football while keeping opposing defenses honest through the air.

Hawkins also benefits from an offense that forces defenses to respect the run. That creates favorable throwing opportunities when linebackers move toward the line of scrimmage.
His challenge is maintaining that efficiency against TCU’s disciplined defense.
West Virginia Mountaineers vs. TCU Horned Frogs bottom line: TCU owns the stronger defense, but West Virginia’s explosive offense gives the Mountaineers a chance to make this a demanding afternoon.
West Virginia Mountaineers vs. TCU Horned Frogs Football Betting Trends
- The Mountaineers have a 7-0 record for the over in their last seven games when the total is 50 or more.
- Plus, West Virginia is 4-0 against the spread in their last five games after a win.
- The Horned Frogs are 5-0 straight up in their last five games with totals of 50 or more.
- TCU has covered the spread in all five of their last games with totals of 50 or more.
- Also, the Mountaineers are 5-0 for the over in their last five away games.
- TCU is 8-4 against the spread in their last 12 home games.
Mountaineers Horned Frogs Free Pick: West Virginia +8.5
Here is my Mountaineers Horned Frogs free pick: I’m taking West Virginia +8.5. The Mountaineers have covered four of their last five games following a win. TCU is the favorite, but laying more than a touchdown with an offense that’s struggled to finish drives isn’t my kind of price.
West Virginia has gone Over in five straight road games, which tells me its games away from home haven’t lacked scoring. That doesn’t guarantee a cover, but it gives this underdog a chance to answer when TCU puts points up.
The Mountaineers cannot afford a turnover parade.
TCU needs separation, while West Virginia only needs to stay within one possession.
TCU’s defense is good enough to make this uncomfortable. Still, the Horned Frogs haven’t consistently turned defensive stops into commanding leads.
I’m not looking for West Virginia to control the game.
The Mountaineers need enough offense to keep the fourth quarter meaningful. If they avoid gifting TCU short fields, that 8.5-point cushion should stay in play.
Make the Horned Frogs prove they can pull away. My bet is West Virginia +8.5.
