Golden Bears vs. Mustangs Gameday
The California Golden Bears visit the No. 23 SMU Mustangs on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. Kickoff is set for noon ET on The CW. This Week 8 ACC matchup brings together two teams heading in very different directions.
California enters 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play under Tosh Lupoi. The Golden Bears have split their two road games and are trying to recover from another disappointing home performance.
Dallas isn’t offering much relief.
SMU is unbeaten at home, but California already knows what it takes to upset these Mustangs.
SMU stands 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC under Rhett Lashlee. The Mustangs have won all four home games and are riding a three-game winning streak. Another victory would keep them firmly in the conference race.
California stunned SMU in last season’s meeting, so the Mustangs have some unfinished business. This time, they get the rematch on their own field.
It’s Week 8, California Golden Bears vs. SMU Mustangs, hopefully we get a great matchup.

California Golden Bears vs. SMU Mustangs Odds & Previous Games
SMU opened as the -1191 moneyline favorite, with California priced at +746. The Mustangs are laying 19.5 points at home, while the Golden Bears are getting 19.5. The total opened at 53.5 points.
California is 2-3 over its last five games, beating Virginia Tech 25-20 and Wagner 49-7. The Golden Bears lost 41-7 to Wake Forest in their latest outing.
UNLV also beat Cal 39-31, while Clemson handed the Bears a 24-10 defeat.
SMU has won four of its last five, defeating Virginia 23-13, Boston College 25-16 and Missouri State 34-24. The Mustangs also beat UC Davis 56-10. Their lone defeat in that stretch came against Louisville, 41-31.

Mustangs Stats
SMU has scored 196 points through six games, averaging 32.7 per contest. The Mustangs have generated 1,951 passing yards and 849 rushing yards. Their passing attack remains the biggest threat in Lashlee’s offense.
Kendrick Raphael has rushed for 542 yards and six touchdowns. The former California running back has provided SMU with a dependable option between the tackles.
His familiarity with the Golden Bears adds an interesting wrinkle.
Defensively, SMU has allowed 128 points, an average of 21.3 per game. The Mustangs have recorded two interceptions and recovered three opponent fumbles. They’ve also held opponents to a 26.5 percent conversion rate on third down, one of the country’s best marks.
SMU has been particularly effective at limiting passing opportunities on obvious throwing downs. That defensive strength could become important against a California offense heavily dependent on its quarterbacks.
Lashlee will want the Mustangs controlling those situations from the opening drive.
Golden Bears Stats
California has generated 2,017 passing yards through seven games, averaging 288.1 per contest. The rushing attack has produced only 640 yards, or 91.4 per game. That imbalance has made the Golden Bears increasingly reliant on their passing game.
Adam Mohammed has rushed for 336 yards and three touchdowns, while Ashten Emory has provided additional carries. Neither has consistently supplied the explosive ground gains Cal needs.
The Bears cannot afford to abandon the run entirely.
California’s passing attack can move the football, but its limited rushing production makes offensive balance difficult.
Defensively, California has allowed 194 points, averaging 27.7 per game. The Golden Bears have recorded 15 sacks and seven interceptions. Those takeaways have helped offset stretches when opponents have moved the ball effectively.
Cal has struggled to contain productive rushing attacks, particularly when opponents establish favorable down-and-distance situations. Better tackling and gap discipline are essential against SMU’s balanced offense.
Another afternoon of missed assignments could get ugly quickly.
Golden Bears vs. Mustangs QB Matchup
Kevin Jennings directs SMU’s offense and has been among the ACC’s most productive quarterbacks. Through six games, he has thrown for 1,951 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. His accuracy and willingness to challenge coverage have made the Mustangs dangerous through the air.
Jennings has also demonstrated an ability to extend plays outside the pocket. That mobility makes it difficult for opposing defenses to rely exclusively on pressure.
California needs to keep him from turning broken plays into big gains.
Ty Hawkins provides depth behind Jennings and has seen limited action this season. He has thrown for 104 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Jennings remains the established starter in Lashlee’s offense.
SMU has relied on his decision-making to sustain drives and create explosive plays. The Golden Bears need to disrupt that rhythm without leaving receivers uncovered.
Giving Jennings easy throwing lanes would be a costly mistake.

California’s quarterback situation remains unsettled after Jackson Brousseau started against Wake Forest ahead of Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Brousseau has completed 75 of 120 passes for 701 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His recent performances have kept him in contention for the starting job.
Sagapolutele has completed 122 of 182 attempts for 1,290 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He returned from a concussion and saw action in the second half against Wake Forest. Lupoi has not established a clear starter for Saturday’s matchup.
California Golden Bears vs. SMU Mustangs bottom line: SMU has the steadier quarterback situation and stronger home form, while California needs improved execution to challenge the Mustangs.
California Golden Bears vs. SMU Mustangs Football Betting Trends
- California is 9-2 straight up after a loss in their last 11 games.
- Also, Cal has covered the spread 4 out of 5 times after a loss recently.
- The Golden Bears have gone over the total 15-9-1 in their last 25 games after a loss.
- SMU is 23-3 straight up in their last 26 home games.
- Additionally, the Mustangs are 25-5 straight up as favorites in their last 30 games.
- SMU has hit the over 17 times in their last 30 games following a win.
Golden Bears Mustangs Free Pick: California +19.5
Here is my Golden Bears Mustangs free pick: I’m betting California +19.5. Cal has covered four of its last five games following a loss. SMU’s impressive home record doesn’t automatically justify laying nearly three touchdowns. The Mustangs have the edge, but they haven’t been blowing everybody out.
Their last two victories came by 10 and nine points.
That’s a steep jump to a 20-point margin.
Cal doesn’t need an upset; it needs to make SMU earn every point of separation.
I’m looking for California to answer a couple of SMU scoring drives and avoid the turnover that breaks a big underdog’s back. The Golden Bears have enough passing ability to challenge this number. Their quarterback decision remains the obvious concern.
SMU should win, but I’m not paying that kind of premium for the favorite. The Mustangs have been winning without consistently burying opponents.
I’ll take my chances with the points.
CaL +19.5 is the bet.
