Wolfpack vs. Cardinal Gameday
The North Carolina State Wolfpack travel to Stanford Stadium for a Friday night ACC matchup with the Stanford Cardinal. Kickoff is set for October 23, 2026, at 10:30 PM ET on ESPN. Both programs are looking for some consistency as the conference schedule gets tougher.
NC State enters 3-3 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. Dave Doeren’s Wolfpack are 3-1 at home but have lost both road games.
A cross-country trip is an interesting place to try fixing that problem.
NC State has the stronger offense, but Stanford’s home record makes this a tougher assignment than it appears.
Stanford stands 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Cardinal have won three of four at home under Tavita Pritchard, including their latest outing against Elon. Their performances away from Stanford Stadium have been considerably less encouraging.
NC State won the only previous meeting between these programs in 2024. This time, the Cardinal get to host the Wolfpack.
It’s Week 8, North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Stanford Cardinal, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Cardinal Stats
Stanford has scored 128 points through seven games, averaging 18.3 per contest. The Cardinal have accumulated 1,676 passing yards and 748 rushing yards. Their offense has struggled to turn respectable yardage into consistent scoring.
Running back Micah Ford has rushed for 529 yards and eight touchdowns. Receiver Caden High has added 21 catches for 337 yards and three scores.
Stanford needs more than occasional big plays to keep pace with stronger opponents.
Stanford has offensive talent, but its inability to finish drives has repeatedly left the defense exposed.
The Cardinal have allowed 256 points, averaging 36.6 per game. Their defense has intercepted three passes and recovered three opponent fumbles. Takeaways haven’t been enough to overcome the problems defending sustained drives.
Opponents have averaged 452 yards per game against Stanford. That includes 196.6 rushing yards, leaving plenty of work for the Cardinal’s front seven.
Pritchard needs a much cleaner defensive performance against NC State.
Wolfpack Stats
NC State has scored 198 points through six games, averaging 33 per contest. The Wolfpack have produced 1,547 passing yards and 1,011 net rushing yards. Their offense has shown considerably more balance than Stanford’s.
Running back Jayden Scott leads the team with 358 rushing yards and four touchdowns. His availability is worth monitoring after injury concerns entering the matchup.
The Wolfpack need reliable production from their backfield on the road.
NC State has allowed 166 points, averaging 27.7 per contest. The defense has collected three interceptions and recovered five opponent fumbles. Its eight sacks have provided some pressure, although opponents have still found opportunities through the air.
The Wolfpack have surrendered 363.8 total yards per game. Their defense has been serviceable without consistently shutting opponents down.
Doeren needs fewer missed assignments and more third-down stops.
Wolfpack vs. Cardinal QB Matchup
Davis Warren directs Stanford’s passing attack. Through seven games, he has completed 141 of 234 passes for 1,630 yards. Warren has thrown seven touchdowns against two interceptions, showing an ability to protect the football despite Stanford’s uneven offensive results.
Warren delivered 396 passing yards and three touchdowns against Georgia Tech. That performance showed what he can accomplish when the protection holds up.
NC State cannot afford to let him get comfortable in the pocket.
Stanford’s quarterback has faced considerable pressure against tougher opponents. The Cardinal need Warren making quick decisions and avoiding negative plays that put the offense behind schedule. His ability to distribute the ball will be important against NC State’s secondary.
The Wolfpack counter with CJ Bailey, who has completed 126 of 189 passes for 1,507 yards. Bailey has thrown nine touchdowns and four interceptions in six appearances.
His accuracy gives NC State a dependable way to attack Stanford’s coverage.

Bailey is completing 66.7 percent of his passes while averaging 251.2 passing yards per game. He has also contributed as a runner, giving defenses another consideration when plays break down. His ability to extend possessions makes him difficult to contain when protection fails.
Warren has demonstrated explosive passing potential, while Bailey has been more efficient across the season. Both quarterbacks need their offensive lines to provide enough time to exploit favorable matchups.
North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Stanford Cardinal bottom line: NC State has the more dependable offense, but handling Stanford’s home-field advantage and avoiding costly mistakes will determine whether the Wolfpack take control.
North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Stanford Cardinal Football Betting Trends
- North Carolina State is 26-4 straight up in their last 30 games as a favorite.
- Also, the Wolfpack have gone 4-0 on the over/under in their last 4 games as a favorite.
- North Carolina State is 8-2 on the over/under in their last 10 games after a loss.
- Stanford is 4-0 on the over/under in their last 4 games after a win.
- Additionally, the Cardinal have gone 3-0 on the over/under in their last 3 games as an underdog.
- Stanford is 8-3 straight up in their last 11 home games.
Wolfpack Cardinal Free Pick: Wolfpack -7
Here is my Wolfpack Cardinal free pick: I’m backing NC State -7. The Wolfpack have won 26 of their last 30 games as favorites, although that doesn’t automatically mean they’ll cover. Stanford’s defense gives them a legitimate chance to do both. The key is getting ahead early and forcing the Cardinal to abandon a balanced offense. NC State cannot let another road game turn into a fourth-quarter scramble.
Seven points leaves no room for a lazy finish.
NC State needs to build a two-score lead and make Stanford earn every possession afterward.
Stanford has been more competitive at home, but the Wolfpack have enough offensive weapons to create separation. I want NC State attacking the Cardinal’s secondary rather than settling for conservative drives. The real danger is a late Stanford touchdown against a comfortable lead. That’s why finishing drives matters as much as moving the ball between the 20s.
I’m expecting NC State to control this matchup.
The Wolfpack don’t need a masterpiece, but they do need to keep their foot on the gas. Give me the better offense to put this one out of reach.
Stanford can have the home-field edge.
I’ll take the team better equipped to cover the number: NC St. -7.
