The Tennessee Volunteers and the Clemson Tigers will head down to Miami and face off in the Capital One Orange Bowl this Friday on ESPN. The Tigers enter this ironically-themed bout as the four-point favorites, with the total sitting at 63.5.
HISTORY: This will be the 19th time Clemson and Tennessee face off, and it will mark the first time they cross paths since the 2004 Peach Bowl. The Tigers won that matchup, but the Volunteers hold the all-time series lead, 10-6-2.
Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee had high hopes this season, and they nearly reached those aspirations, but a loss in Athens to Georgia, followed by beatdown from SC in Columbia would hinder their progress. Tennessee picked up arguably their biggest win in school history after defeating Alabama in an instant classic back in October, and after shutting in-state foe Vanderbilt out, I like their chances in this contest.
Joe Milton III will start in place of Heisman hopeful Hendon Hooker. The four-year starter was injured in the SC game, and his presence will be missed. Milton, a Michigan transfer, was solid in spot duty and his first start versus Vandy, and he totaled 720 passing yards with seven touchdowns to no interceptions on the season.
Jaylen Wright finished as the team’s leading rusher at 786 yards after scoring twice versus Vandy. Jalin Hyatt (67/1267/15) set school records this season, and has a chance to reel in the Biletnikoff Award.
Clemson Tigers
Clemson also had high hopes this season, after surviving a scare from another fellow orange program (Syracuse), they couldn’t walk out of South Bend undefeated. The Tigers still had the benefit of the ACC championship game, but a terrible showing from DJ Uiagalelei led to an unseen blemish from South Carolina, and no CFB playoff bid in sight.
Clemson did manage to bounce back and defeat North Carolina in the ACC Championship, covering the
Uiagalelei was bench in the ACC title win over UNC, which quickly prompted the former top recruit QB to enter the transfer portal. True freshman Cade Klubnik was thrusted into action and delivered with an accurate, turnover-free performance. Will Shipley should have a bigger role in this bout after a quiet conference championship, and the sophomore back is among ACC leaders with 1,110 yards, and 15 touchdowns. Antonio Williams led Clemson in receptions (52) and receiving yards (557).

Free 2022 Orange Bowl NCAA Football Final Analysis:
Ah, it’s only right that these two CFB Playoff hopefuls would face off in the Orange Bowl. A Gamecocks’ fan dream match-up here, as both schools had their season’s altered by South Carolina, and find themselves outside of the party. Head coaces Josh Heupel and Dabo Swinney are both down to QB2, and I like the experience Milton carries into this game for the Vols, who should be fired up to attending their biggest bowl game since the Phillip Fulmer era.
This Tennessee team has come through multiple times this season, give them one more opportunity to cement their memoir against a potentially uninterested Clemson squad. Despite missing the CFB Playoff, it’s been a memorable, and groundbreaking year for Rocky Top. Look for them to close it with a bang here, and spot the Vols the points for safety.
