Minutemen vs. Huskies Gameday
The Massachusetts Minutemen visit the Connecticut Huskies on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network. This Week 8 rivalry matchup features two New England programs trying to build momentum.
Massachusetts enters 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Minutemen have dropped three straight games after opening the season with four victories.
Joe Harasymiak needs his team to rediscover that early momentum.
UMass has improved, but Connecticut’s extra preparation time makes this a difficult road assignment.
Connecticut stands 3-3 and returns home following an open week. Jason Candle’s Huskies have struggled to a 1-2 home record, although they’ve been competitive in several difficult games. Friday offers another opportunity to establish some consistency.
The Minutemen are 2-1 away from home, making this more interesting than the opening records suggest. Connecticut will be looking to take advantage of its home crowd.
Neither side is interested in handing its regional rival bragging rights.
It’s Week 8, Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Connecticut Huskies, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Connecticut Huskies Odds & Previous Games
Connecticut opened as the -670 moneyline favorite, with Massachusetts at +482. The Huskies are laying 14.5 points at home, while the Minutemen are getting 14.5. The total is set at 49.5 points.
Massachusetts has lost three consecutive games, falling 38-14 to Eastern Michigan, 20-19 to Miami (Ohio) and 25-18 at Buffalo. Before that stretch, the Minutemen defeated Sacramento State 35-6.
They also beat Stonehill 36-14 earlier in the season.
Connecticut ended a two-game skid with a 34-20 victory at Temple. The Huskies previously lost 42-41 in overtime to Syracuse and 24-21 at Miami (Ohio). Their other recent results include a 48-20 victory at Southern Miss and a 38-14 defeat against Maryland.
UConn has won the last three meetings with Massachusetts, including a 47-42 victory in 2024. The Huskies also won 31-18 in 2023 and 27-10 in 2022.
Massachusetts last won the rivalry 27-13 in 2021, and the all-time series is tied 38-38-2.

Huskies Stats
Connecticut has scored 214 points through six games, averaging 35.7 per contest. The Huskies have generated 1,539 passing yards and 1,172 net rushing yards. Their offense averages 451.8 total yards per game, giving opponents plenty to worry about.
Cyncir Bowers leads the ground attack with 433 rushing yards and six touchdowns. His ability to produce explosive gains gives Connecticut a useful complement to its passing game.
UConn doesn’t have to rely on one player to move the chains.
Connecticut has the offensive firepower to punish UMass for missed tackles and blown assignments.
Defensively, the Huskies have allowed 151 points, averaging 25.2 per game. They’ve recorded 11 sacks and four interceptions through six contests. Their biggest problem has been allowing opponents to sustain drives when pressure doesn’t arrive.
Connecticut has surrendered 407.5 yards per game, including 290.5 through the air. Those numbers leave room for Massachusetts to move the football if its passing attack is functioning.
Candle needs a sharper defensive effort than his team has delivered at times.
Minutemen Stats
Massachusetts has scored 196 points in seven games, averaging 28 per contest. The Minutemen have produced 1,121 net rushing yards and 1,253 passing yards. Their offense has been more productive than in recent seasons, even with its recent difficulties.
The defense has allowed 134 points, an average of 19.1 per game. Opponents are gaining only 307.9 yards per contest, making this one of the more effective units in the MAC.
UMass has been considerably tougher to move the football against than its reputation suggests.
The Minutemen have collected seven interceptions and recovered six opponent fumbles. Their 13 takeaways lead the MAC and have helped compensate for stretches when the offense struggles. Safety Jahmad Harmon has contributed three interceptions.
Receiver T.Y. Harding has provided versatility with receiving, rushing and punt-return touchdowns this season. His ability to contribute in several roles gives UMass another way to create field position.
The Minutemen need those contributions against a Connecticut team capable of scoring quickly.
Minutemen vs. Huskies QB Matchup
Kalieb Osborne has been Connecticut’s primary quarterback through six games. He has completed 98 of 163 passes for 1,421 yards, throwing 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. His 236.8 passing yards per game have given the Huskies a reliable offensive foundation.
Osborne has completed 60.1 percent of his attempts and can challenge defenses downfield. His ability to produce explosive passing plays makes Connecticut difficult to defend when the running game is working.
Massachusetts cannot afford to give him uncontested throwing lanes.
Osborne threw for a career-high 314 yards and three touchdowns against Syracuse. That performance showed his ability to produce when Connecticut needs to throw frequently. He also connected with Trey Cornist for a touchdown in overtime.
Massachusetts counters with William “Pop” Watson III, who has completed 74 of 100 passes for 820 yards. Watson has thrown seven touchdowns and two interceptions across five appearances.
His 74 percent completion rate has been one of the strongest marks in the MAC.

Watson missed the Miami (Ohio) and Buffalo games with a lower-body injury, leaving his availability for Friday uncertain. Logan Inagawa has completed 20 of 31 passes for 251 yards in four appearances. Aedan McCarthy has also played, completing 17 of 33 attempts for 182 yards.
Watson offers the most established production, but UMass may need to adjust if he cannot return. Connecticut will prepare for multiple possibilities rather than assuming the Minutemen have their preferred quarterback available.
Massachusetts Minutemen vs. Connecticut Huskies bottom line: UConn brings the more explosive offense into Friday’s rivalry, while UMass needs a settled quarterback situation and another strong defensive performance to stay competitive.

- Additionally, the Minutemen have gone over in 8 of their last 9 games after a loss.

- The Huskies are 14-3 straight up in their last 17 home games.

Minutemen Huskies Free Pick: UConn Huskies -14.5
Here is my Minutemen Huskies free pick: I’m backing Connecticut Huskies -14.5. UConn has won 19 of its last 21 games as a favorite, and I’m expecting the Huskies to handle business at home. Massachusetts has improved, but this isn’t a friendly spot for a team trying to stop a losing streak.
Connecticut has also covered six of its last eight as a favorite. The Huskies have won 14 of their last 17 home games, and those are the kinds of situations I like when laying points.
I’m looking for a comfortable win, not a last-minute escape.
Connecticut needs to put this game away early enough that a late UMass touchdown doesn’t steal the cover.
The Huskies have the offense to build that cushion, but finishing drives matters. Field goals won’t do much good when you’re laying more than two touchdowns. I want Connecticut getting seven points when it reaches scoring territory.
Massachusetts can hang around if UConn starts handing away possessions. The Huskies need to protect the football and make the Minutemen drive the length of the field.
Make UMass earn its points instead of donating them. That half-point beyond two touchdowns is the only part of this number that bothers me. A 28-14 win looks fine on television and loses our bet. I’m expecting Connecticut to create enough separation that we aren’t sweating one meaningless fourth-quarter score. UMass can bring the fight, but I don’t see it bringing enough offense to keep pace.
UConn should be able to take control and stay there.
Let’s cash this thing. I’m laying UConn -14.5.
