Dukes vs. Mountaineers Gameday
James Madison heads to Boone on Thursday, October 22, 2026, to face Appalachian State at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET on ESPNU. The Dukes arrive as the nation’s only 7-0 team, with a 4-0 record in Sun Belt play.
JMU has been perfect both at home and on the road, winning four games in Harrisonburg and three away from home. The short turnaround presents another challenge for a program that hasn’t lost since last season.
Thursday’s assignment comes with a sold-out crowd waiting.
JMU has handled every challenge so far, but Boone has a habit of making visitors uncomfortable.
Appalachian State enters 4-2 and has won two of three home games. The Mountaineers are 1-1 in conference action and have an opportunity to make a serious statement against the Sun Belt’s unbeaten contender.
Both teams won their previous outings, but JMU has considerably more riding on this trip. An upset would change the conference race in a hurry.
The Mountaineers would be delighted to cause that problem.
It’s Week 8, James Madison Dukes vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers, hopefully we get a great matchup.

James Madison Dukes vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers Odds & Previous Games
James Madison opened as the -421 moneyline favorite, with Appalachian State at +325. The Dukes are laying 10.5 points, while the Mountaineers are getting 10.5. The total is set at 56.5 points.
JMU’s last five victories came against San Diego State 26-13, Old Dominion 46-20, Marshall 45-17, Georgia Southern 27-24 and Georgia State 49-22. The close call against Georgia Southern was the only one decided by fewer than 13 points.
The Dukes have been difficult to slow down when they get rolling.
Appalachian State beat East Carolina 27-24 and Charlotte 26-21 before losing to NC State 41-31 and Old Dominion 10-3. The Mountaineers bounced back with a 35-32 victory over Coastal Carolina. Their results show an offense capable of responding, but not always one that starts quickly.
James Madison won the 2025 meeting 58-10, while Appalachian State claimed the 2024 contest 34-20 and the 2023 game 26-23. JMU also won 32-28 in Boone in 2022.

Mountaineers Stats
Appalachian State has scored 177 points through six games, averaging 29.5 per contest. The Mountaineers have produced 1,606 passing yards and have shown the ability to attack defenses downfield. Their consistency has been less impressive than their overall production.
Jaquari Lewis has provided a productive rushing option, while Henry Hasselbeck can contribute on designed runs and broken plays. That versatility gives Appalachian State alternatives when its traditional running game stalls.
The Mountaineers have offensive weapons, but sustaining drives against JMU will demand more discipline.
Appalachian State has allowed 131 points, an average of 21.8 per game. The defense has recorded nine interceptions and recovered two fumbles. Those takeaways have helped offset stretches of inconsistent tackling and coverage.
The Mountaineers have nine sacks and have allowed 214.5 passing yards per game. Creating pressure without sacrificing coverage will be particularly important against an efficient JMU passing attack.
Giving the Dukes easy throws is asking for a long night.
Dukes Stats
James Madison has scored 300 points in seven games, averaging 42.9 per contest. The Dukes have generated 1,661 passing yards and 1,566 net rushing yards. That balance forces opponents to defend the entire field rather than concentrate on one part of the offense.
George Pettaway has rushed for 767 yards and has been a major reason the ground game works. His ability to turn routine carries into productive gains keeps JMU ahead of schedule.
Defenses haven’t found many reliable answers.
The Dukes have allowed 112 points, an average of 16 per game. Opponents have managed 114.3 rushing yards per contest, and JMU has limited them to 13 offensive touchdowns. Those results reflect a defense that rarely gives away easy scoring opportunities.
Nick Herman adds another option in the backfield, giving the Dukes depth behind Pettaway. JMU can rotate runners without abandoning its preferred offensive approach.
That flexibility becomes especially useful on a short week.
Dukes vs. Mountaineers QB Matchup
Malachi Singleton has handled most of Appalachian State’s quarterback work, throwing for 1,429 yards and seven touchdowns. He has attempted 169 passes and thrown two interceptions. His mobility gives the Mountaineers another way to extend plays when protection breaks down.
Singleton has dealt with an ankle issue, although he appeared against Coastal Carolina. His availability and workload remain worth monitoring ahead of Thursday.
Appalachian State needs its passing game operating at full strength.
Henry Hasselbeck has completed 15 of 21 attempts for 157 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also provides a running threat and has been used in multiple situations. His presence gives the Mountaineers some flexibility if their quarterback rotation changes.
James Madison has relied on Camden Coleman as its primary passer. He has thrown 13 touchdowns against only one interception, demonstrating excellent ball security.
Coleman’s decision-making has helped keep the Dukes out of unnecessary trouble.

JC Evans has contributed 199 passing yards and four touchdowns in limited action. His production gives JMU another option without requiring the offense to abandon its established identity. The Dukes have been able to maintain their rhythm when changing personnel.
Appalachian State must keep its quarterbacks away from obvious passing situations. JMU’s defensive front can make life difficult when opponents become predictable.
James Madison Dukes vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers bottom line: JMU brings the stronger overall team, but Appalachian State’s quarterback health and ability to sustain drives will shape how competitive Thursday becomes.

- Appalachian State has covered the spread in their last 3 games as underdogs.

Dukes Mountaineers Free Pick: Under 56.5
Here is my Dukes Mountaineers free pick: I’m betting Under 56.5. James Madison can put up points in a hurry, but Appalachian State doesn’t have to cooperate. The Dukes could win this game comfortably without needing a fourth-quarter scoring contest.
The Mountaineers can’t afford to turn this into a track meet. Their best shot is to protect the football, extend possessions and make JMU work for every scoring opportunity.
Trading quick touchdowns with the Dukes is a terrific way to get embarrassed on national television.
I’m betting on James Madison controlling the game, not both offenses putting on a Thursday night fireworks show.
The 56.5 gives us some breathing room if JMU takes charge. A 31-17 or 34-20 finish still cashes, and neither requires Appalachian State to shut down one of the country’s better offenses. The real threat is turnovers handing the Dukes cheap points and turning a manageable total into a disaster.
That’s why field position matters more than highlight-reel plays in this matchup. If Appalachian State makes JMU sustain drives, the clock becomes an ally instead of another problem.
I see the Dukes controlling this matchup without needing to run up the score.
We’re rolling with Under 56.5.
