Blue Devils vs. Cavaliers Gameday
The Duke Blue Devils visit the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET on ESPN. This Week 8 ACC matchup features two teams trying to rebound from disappointing defeats.
Duke enters 4-2 overall and 1-1 on the road. The Blue Devils have lost two straight after opening the season with four victories.
Manny Diaz needs a response before those losses become a bigger problem.
Duke brings the stronger defensive numbers, but Virginia hasn’t lost at Scott Stadium this season.
Virginia is 4-3 overall and unbeaten through four home games. Tony Elliott’s Cavaliers have struggled away from Charlottesville, making this return particularly important. A fifth home victory would put Virginia one win from bowl eligibility.
These teams split two important meetings last season, including the ACC Championship Game. Neither program needs a history lesson about the opponent.
Friday offers a chance to settle a few old arguments.
It’s Week 8, Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Cavaliers, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Cavaliers Odds & Previous Games
Virginia opened as the -123 moneyline favorite, with Duke at +103. The Cavaliers are laying 1.5 points at home, while the Blue Devils are getting 1.5. The total is set at 47.5 points.
Duke’s recent wins include a 31-27 victory at Illinois, a 35-7 decision over Stanford and a 62-7 rout of William & Mary. The Blue Devils then fell 28-25 at Georgia Tech.
North Carolina followed with a 24-20 victory over Duke.
Virginia has gone 2-3 over its last five games, beating Delaware 42-3 and Syracuse 28-25. The Cavaliers lost 38-27 to West Virginia, 38-7 at Florida State and 23-13 at SMU. Their road performances have been considerably less convincing than their home results.
Duke won the 2025 ACC Championship Game 27-20 in overtime at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium. Virginia had defeated the Blue Devils 34-17 in Durham during the regular season.

Cavaliers Stats
Virginia has scored 210 points in seven games, averaging 30 per contest. The Cavaliers have produced 1,442 passing yards and 1,098 rushing yards. Their offense has shown it can move the football, although finishing drives has become more difficult against stronger opponents.
Jekail Middlebrook leads the rushing attack with 396 yards and three touchdowns. He has also caught 10 passes for 70 yards, giving Virginia another option underneath.
Middlebrook’s versatility gives the Cavaliers some flexibility when the passing game stalls.
Virginia has protected its home field, but Duke’s defensive front will test that unbeaten record.
Injuries have complicated Virginia’s offensive plans. Receivers Rico Flores Jr. and Kameron Courtney missed the SMU game, leaving the Cavaliers short of established targets. Their availability for Friday remains important.
Virginia has allowed 138 points through seven games, averaging 19.7 per contest. That defense has helped keep the Cavaliers competitive when their offense struggles.
Elliott needs both units working together against Duke.
Blue Devils Stats
Duke has scored 190 points in six games, averaging 31.7 per contest. The Blue Devils have allowed only 96 points, an average of 16 per game. Their defense has been the steadier part of the team during a season with some uneven offensive performances.
Nate Sheppard has rushed for 828 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s averaging six yards per carry, giving Duke a dependable way to sustain possessions.
Sheppard has been doing plenty of the heavy lifting.
The Blue Devils have recorded 13 sacks and recovered four opponent fumbles. Their defense has also collected an interception, although generating takeaways has been less consistent than creating pressure. Negative plays have helped Duke put opponents behind schedule.
Kicker Cosme Salas has been listed as out for the season, leaving Duke to manage its kicking responsibilities with other options. That situation could influence decisions on fourth down.
Diaz cannot afford to leave easy points on the field in a tight matchup.
Blue Devils vs. Cavaliers QB Matchup
Beau Pribula has handled Virginia’s primary quarterback duties through seven games. He has completed 104 of 159 passes for 1,217 yards, with 13 touchdowns and one interception. His ability to protect the football has helped Virginia avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Pribula also presents a running threat, although sacks have reduced his net rushing production. Defenses still must account for his ability to escape the pocket.
Duke cannot afford to lose contain when the play breaks down.
Virginia’s passing attack has been less productive against stronger defensive opponents. Pribula managed 137 passing yards against SMU, and the Cavaliers struggled to generate consistent downfield opportunities. Injuries among the receivers have made his job more difficult.
Duke counters with Walker Eget, who has completed 108 of 173 passes for 1,229 yards. He has thrown eight touchdowns and two interceptions in six appearances.
Eget has produced useful stretches, but consistency remains the challenge.

Eget’s best opportunities often come when the running game creates favorable passing situations. He can attack defenses that crowd the line of scrimmage, but he must avoid forcing throws into coverage. Virginia’s defense will look to make him operate under pressure.
Pribula has the stronger touchdown-to-interception ratio, while Eget benefits from Duke’s productive backfield. Both quarterbacks face a test of patience against defenses capable of disrupting drives.
Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Cavaliers bottom line: Duke’s defensive strength meets Virginia’s unbeaten home record in a matchup where quarterback discipline and field position could decide the outcome.

Blue Devils Cavaliers Free Pick: Under 47.5
Here is my Blue Devils Cavaliers free pick: I’m betting Under 47.5. This is a short-spread ACC fight between two teams coming off losses, not a game where either coach should be chasing style points. I expect both sides to make the other earn every scoring drive.
Virginia’s offense has been far less convincing against tougher competition. The Cavaliers can’t afford to get reckless with the football against a Duke defense that has been difficult to score on. I’m not counting on either quarterback turning into a Friday night superhero.
The quickest way to lose an Under is giving away cheap touchdowns, and both teams have every reason to play smarter than that.
Duke has a running game capable of taking pressure off its quarterback. That matters because three productive runs can burn more clock than a handful of desperate throws. I’ll take six-minute drives over three-play touchdowns all night.
The danger is an early turnover setting somebody up inside the 20. That can wreck a total before the offenses have even found their rhythm.
Make them drive the length of the field and I’ll live with the results. At 47.5, we’re not asking for a 10-7 rock fight. A 24-20 or 23-21 finish gets the money, and both are realistic outcomes in a game with a spread this tight. What I don’t want is either team abandoning the run because of one bad quarter. I’m expecting a few ugly possessions, some stalled drives and plenty of clock disappearing between scores.
That’s exactly the kind of Friday night football I want when I’m holding an Under.
Forget the fireworks. I’m hammering Under 47.5.
