Jay Sawvel’s Cowboys are 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West. Wyoming has won both home games this season.
The Cowboys return to Laramie after an overtime conference victory. They’ve shown improvement defensively but continue searching for offensive consistency. Cowboys Stats
Wyoming has scored 87 points through six games, averaging fewer than 15 per contest. The Cowboys have rushed for 998 yards but struggled to consistently turn yardage into touchdowns. Their offense needs better execution inside opposing territory.
Markell Holman leads the rushing attack with 322 yards and three TD’s. Samuel Harris provides another option in the backfield.
The two backs give Wyoming a physical approach that can challenge weaker defensive fronts.
Wyoming’s defense has provided stability while the offense continues searching for dependable scoring production.
The Cowboys have allowed 123 points this season, an average of 20.5 per game. Their defense has recorded 12 sacks and three interceptions.
Linebacker Ethan Stuhlsatz leads Wyoming in tackles per game. Defensive end Esaia Bogar has contributed 3.5 sacks and been an important part of the pass rush.
Jake Wilson leads the receiving corps with 197 yards on 19 catches. His work underneath provides a dependable target when the Cowboys need short completions. Wyoming must improve its finishing ability to capitalize on the opportunities its defense creates.
Huskies Stats
Northern Illinois has scored 62 points through five games, averaging fewer than 13 per contest. The Huskies have produced 1,024 passing yards but only 433 rushing yards. Their inability to establish balance has made sustained offensive drives difficult.
Telly Johnson Jr. leads the ground attack with 300 rushing yards and three TD’s. He has scored in three of his last four appearances.
Johnson remains an important part of an offense searching for dependable production.
The Huskies have allowed 173 points this season. Their defense has recorded eight sacks and five interceptions.
Wide receiver DeAree Rogers has contributed 333 receiving yards and two TD’s. He remains a dependable target when Northern Illinois needs to move the chains. Linebackers Jack Murray and Brady Kerperin have provided consistent tackling production. Safety Kyon Conyers has also been active around the football. NIU needs better run fits and fewer missed assignments to avoid another difficult afternoon defensively.
Huskies vs. Cowboys QB Matchup
Wyoming QB Tyler Hughes has thrown for 822 yards through six games. He has three TD passes and seven interceptions. His turnovers have been a major concern for the Cowboys.
Hughes has attempted 137 passes this season. His passing production averages 137 yards per game.
He has also shown the ability to contribute as a runner when plays break down.
Northern Illinois QB Taron Dickens has thrown for 977 yards through five games. He has three TD passes and three interceptions. His accuracy has been better than the Huskies’ overall scoring numbers suggest.
Dickens has completed 97 of 140 passes. He is averaging better than 195 passing yards per game.
His biggest challenge has been turning completions into sustained scoring possessions.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Hughes has been more effective when Wyoming establishes its running game before asking him to throw. Dickens has handled a larger passing workload but hasn’t received consistent support from his ground attack. Both quarterbacks need to avoid unnecessary risks against defenses capable of forcing turnovers. Neither offense has demonstrated enough consistency to overcome repeated mistakes.
Wyoming needs Hughes to protect the football and take advantage of manageable passing situations. Dickens must recognize pressure and get the ball to his receivers without holding it too long. The team that handles third downs more effectively will gain an important advantage.
Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Wyoming Cowboys bottom line: Wyoming’s defensive front and stronger rushing attack give the Cowboys a favorable matchup against a Northern Illinois team still struggling to establish offensive balance.

- Wyoming has a 17-10 straight-up record in their last 27 home games.

Huskies Cowboys Free Pick: Wyoming -7.5
Here is my Huskies Cowboys free pick: I’m taking Wyoming -7.5. The Cowboys haven’t been impressive offensively, and I’m not pretending otherwise. But Northern Illinois is allowing opponents far too much room to dictate games, especially when the Huskies fall behind early.
Wyoming has won 19 of its last 25 games as a favorite and 17 of its last 27 at home. Those trends support the home side, although the Cowboys still need to earn that extra half-point beyond a touchdown.
This isn’t a spot where I’m interested in laying double digits.
Wyoming doesn’t need an offensive masterpiece, but it does need to turn its favorable field position into touchdowns.
The Huskies have struggled to sustain drives, and repeated three-and-outs would give Wyoming the opportunity to wear down an already vulnerable defense. A couple of early scores would also force NIU away from a conservative game plan, creating more opportunities for the Cowboys to extend the margin.
The danger is obvious: Wyoming could dominate possession and still settle for too many field goals.
I’m willing to accept that risk against an NIU team that has yet to put together four competitive quarters. The Cowboys have the defensive personnel to keep the Huskies chasing the game, and they won’t need much offensive improvement to build a useful lead. My call is Wyoming -7.5, with the Cowboys winning by 10 or more.
