It’s bowl season ladies and gents! The most wonderful time of the year!
It was an incredibly disappointing year for the Gators who should not have been a .500 football team with the talent they had, led by stud quarterback Anthony Richardson.
The Beavers had a far better season finishing 9-3 but still not good enough to be ranked ahead of their divisional foe Ducks.
So we dig a little deeper into this one
Florida Gators
The Gators offence was rock solid all season long. They didn’t rank among the top ten in most of the major metrics but that isn’t necessarily an indictment.
The competition in the NCAA as all of you know is fierce. There are so many great teams hence the change to an expanded playoff and getting rid of the 4 team format.
At the beginning of the season I had really high hopes for this squad but their defence couldn’t save games when they needed or get themselves off the field on 3rd down. They allowed conversions on said 3rd downs to opponents 49% of the time.
What was most detrimental to their success was their red zone defending where they allowed touchdowns on their opponents trips inside of it 85.42% of the time which is horrendous.
I personally am a massive fan of Anthony Richardson, I love the Gators, I love that he is born and raised in Gainesville. But I might be evaluating him with my Gators undies on because his numbers are not indicative of an elite talent.
Now that’s not to say he cannot become one and he will certainly be drafted to the NFL but he has a completion percentage this season of only 53% on 327 attempts. There are some varying factors of course on why that is but this will likely come to fruition against a stout Beavers defence.
Oregon State Beavers
The Beavers defence is really their calling card this season. Not that their offence isn’t solid, it is, but this defensive unit is rather good and hasn’t gotten its due in the national dialogue.
They rank 17th in the entire country for points allowed per game with 20.8 and 37th in the nation in yards allowed per play with 5.2. Not too shabby.
This offence is nothing to shake a stick at either. The tally just a tick under 30 points per game on average and converts 3rd downs nearly 40 percent of the time.
They can get points and they can extend drives decently well.
