2017 Troy Trojans Predictions: Team Strengths
Excellent Quarterback: The Trojans main strength going into 2017 is their three year starter at the quarterback position. Brandon Silvers has been one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the FBS since 2014 and should become the school’s all time career passing leader.
He threw for over 3,000 yards, had a 23 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. As a fourth year starter expect him to be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference.
Behind him on the depth chart is Sawyer Smith, a former top 100 QB who is now in his sophomore season after playing in 6 games last year.
He wasn’t overly efficient but he is a quality backup to have in case of an injury to Silvers.
Very talented secondary : The Trojans had to replace a 2x first team All- Conference free safety as well as a major contributor at cornerback. They added in a transfer from Auburn in Kamryn Melton, who was a top 100 player, and also junior college signee Kris Weatherspoon.
They stepped up and picked off 22 passes! The 52.7% completion percentage was also one of the best in the nation. This season the unit is highlighted by Melton and Weatherspoon again.
Also contributing in the secondary will be Blace Brown, who picked off 6 passes last year and I expect him to snap four or more this season.
This will be a very aggressive unit and has the chance to pick off 20+ passes again.
2017 Troy Trojans Predictions: Team Weaknesses
The linebackers will be tested.: The Trojans linebacking corps loses 5 of their top 6 linebackers from last season. This unit will rely heavily on Tyquae Russell, who started in 11 games and had 36 tackles.
The other projected starters on the depth chart include senior Sam Lebbie who started four games last year, and sophomores Zo Bridges, who played in all 13 games last year, and AJ Smiley who played in all 13 games in 2015 but took a medical redshirt last year.
The linebackers didn’t rack up a lot of sacks last season but this unit has experience and should be aggressive against opposing offenses.
How much will this offensive line struggle The Trojans offensive line will have three key positions to replace. Both tackles graduated, including 3rd round pick Antonio Garcia who was 1st team All-Conference.
The right tackle position and the right guard spot are both going to need to be replaced. With talent missing from last year’s excellent unit that gave up only 8 sacks last season, it will be incredibly tough to match that execution.
Key players on the O-line will include left tackle Steven Rozee, and true sophomores Tristan Crowder (RG) and JL Gaston (RT).
Troy Trojans Prediction: 9-3
Troy will have another excellent season led by strong QB play and has a good chance to reach double digit wins for the second year in a row.
