Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are enjoying a very slim lead in the NL Central but just took a hit with Cole Hamels hitting the injured list. He had actually been their best pitcher this season and I wonder if it might spark an early move. Still lots to like about their lineup but I think they should be better than 10th in the Majors in scoring. Five bats have at least 16 homers.

The book is not very long on Adbert Azolay. He is a rookie and this will be just his second start. The first went OK except for the 4 walks allowed. He has only given up 2 hits in the Majors, over eight innings, but they were both homers. Craig Kimbrel is with the club to lock things down late.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Josh Bell is still slugging away and the Pirates are only a few games under .500 as this is being written. Even though he is usually a disappointment the Bucs will miss not having Gregory Polanco, who is hurt again. They just don’t have a ton of depth even under the best of circumstances. Lonnie Chisenhall is also out and he is his primary replacement so a light offense gets even lighter.

Trevor Williams looked like one of Pittsburgh’s great pitching finds a year ago but this season he has regressed. He was never going to dominate but while he has dropped his walk rate everything else is up and it is not working for him. He has given up 2 homers in each of his last two starts which is troublesome.
