Sunday NBA brings and end to the week with an epic showdown between the league’s top two MVP candidates.
Russell Westbrook has put up ridiculous stat lines all season and will likely close out the year as the second player to ever average a triple-double.
His counterpart in this contest, James Harden, will likely win the Maurice Podoloff Trophy because of his team’s surprising record and stature near the top of the Western Conference, but his numbers as the Rockets’ newest full-time point guard make him deserving all the same.

Oklahoma City Thunder
OKC goes as Russell Westbrook goes. This has become clear throughout the season when looking at the team’s record when he records a triple-double versus when he doesn’t.
Against Houston, the Thunder must look to show James Harden different looks defensively. Harden’s going to get his numbers, but if he’s comfortable within the flow of the offense, he’s going to create for others as well as anybody else does in the league.
Putting Westbrook on him all game long doesn’t make sense, as A) Westbrook is a gritty but not elite defender, and B) there’s no use using up all his energy on that end of the floor.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Houston’s going to score points regardless of how hard the Thunder play on defense, which makes offensive efficiency crucial in this one.
Shooting below 40 percent from the three-point isn’t an option against the Rockets, so while Westbrook will do his damage attacking the paint, his outside shooting and how well he creates outside shots for other will be even more important.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets don’t need to worry about stopping Westbrook. Here’s why:
Yes, it’s true that his triple-doubles often get the Thunder to a victory. But with Houston’s offense likely to put up massive points in this one, it’s all about stopping the complementary players from doing their damage.
If Steven Adams, Enes Kanter and Victor Oladipo are putting up big numbers, this is going to be a close game. If the Rockets are allowing guys like Andre Roberson and Doug McDermott to do the same, lord have mercy.
That shouldn’t be the case, though, as Houston’s defense has actually been underrated this season. Entering this contest, the Rockets are tied for 13th in the league for Defensive Efficiency (100 points per 100 possessions).

The Rockets are 24th in the NBA in points per game allowed, but that has more to do with their pace (fourth) than their competency on that end of the floor.
Houston will give up big numbers to Russ, but Westbrook should be the only one having a great game in this one — and that’s god news for the Rockets.

Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction:
The line hasn’t been set for this contest as of this writing, but we have a ton of confidence giving this one to the Rockets, and by a wide margin.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Rockets -6.
Westbrook will get his numbers against a Rockets defense that will be happy to allow it, but as we’ve seen throughout the year, Houston isn’t nearly as atrocious a defensive squad as some thought they’d be.
The Rockets will take this one at home by double digits.
