NASCAR Sprint Cup – GEICO 500 Preview and Prediction
Race: GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway
Date: Sunday, May 1
Time: 1 p.m. (ET)
Broadcast: FOX
Sunday’s main event at this fabled racing venue is set to get underway at 1 p.m. (ET) and the race will be broadcast nationally on FOX.
This past Sunday at Richmond, Carl Edwards became the third driver to post multiple victories in a Sprint Cup point race this season with the win.

The other two drivers to accomplish this feat rounded-out the Top 3 starting with Kyle Busch in second place and Jimmie Johnson in third.
The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s race at Talladega based on betting odds provided by MyBookie.
GEICO 500 Odds – The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)
When a restrictor plate race rolls around you can pretty much count on Dale Earnhardt Jr. to be at or near the top of the betting odds list.
This week he has been opened as a +800 favorite to win and I like those odds. The No. 88 car finished outside the Top 10 last week at Richmond after fading to 13th, but prior to that it posted back-to-back runner-up finishes at Texas and Bristol.
The main reason that I like Dale Jr’s chances to claim his first Sprint Cup victory this season is his recent performance at this track.
After winning this event last season he went on to place second in the second race of the season at Talladega.
GEICO 500 Odds – The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)
I went with Kevin Harvick last week at Richmond as my top favorite because I thought he was due and he ended-up a respectable fifth. I am going with him this week as my top contender because of his +1200 odds.
Anytime you can get one of the top two or three Sprint Cup drivers in the series at longer odds you have to jump at the chance.
The No. 4 car remains in good form this season with a win at Phoenix and three more Top 5 runs, but the reason for the long odds is an average finishing position of 15.3 at Talladega.

The one thing in his favor is a victory in this race back in 2010, which is his only career win at this track in a Sprint Cup race.
GEICO 500 Odds – The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)
I have really liked what I have seen from rookie Chase Elliott through the first nine races of the season as the new driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet.
He faded to 12th last week at Richmond, but this followed an impressive run where Elliott guided his team to four finishes of eighth or better in five previous events including a fourth-place effort at Bristol two weeks ago.
We have no track record of the rookie at Talladega to go on, but the simple fact that he has been able to stay in the hunt with the veterans more than a few times adds value to his odds.
