NASCAR Handicapping
NASCAR heads to one of its most fabled venues as the green flag will drop Sunday afternoon at the Talladega Superspeedway in what will be the second of three races in the second round of the postseason. Last week’s AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway saw Will Byron cross the finish line first to advance to the round of 8.
Among the 12 drivers looking to advance to the round of 8, the four on the outside looking in are Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Tyler Redick, and Bubba Wallace. Brad Keselowski has won this race twice, and has also compiled three wins at the spring Talladega race – the GEICO 500.
Not surprisingly given his success on this track, Keselowski is the favorite to win the race, followed by Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, and Chris Buescher. Last year’s winner, Chase Elliott, comes in behind them along with Byron and Bubba Wallace at +1400 with the top seven drivers on the betting board tightly clustered.
NASCAR 2023 YellaWood 500 Race Odds: Bubba Wallace +1400
It’d be nice to get better odds on him, but the odds aren’t longer for the very reason we’re backing him here. Wallace is a quality driver with a quality car. And the stats show he’s a very good plate racer. Daytona’s been his track of choice in that regard, but he does have a win in a rain-shortened race at Talladega.
He may prefer Daytona, and we may prefer to back him there as well, but his skillset on a superspeedway has to be factored in. If he can take some of that Daytona magic and transfer it to the Talladega track, and you have to figure that’s coming at some point, then backing Wallace will be a fine choice.
Bet Now On Bubba Wallace +1400!
NASCAR 2023 YellaWood 500 Race Odds: Chase Elliott +1400
Another driver we’d prefer to see better odds on, but Elliott did win at Talladega last fall, and he won the second race at Atlanta’s superspeedway in 2022. Add in a fourth place finish in the summer race at Daytona, and he’s in pretty good shape.
Elliott’s due for a victory and we know he’ll finish near the top of the standings given his plate racing track record. He’s finished inside the top 15 in eight of the last 10 superspeedway races.
Bet Now On Chase Elliott +1400!
NASCAR Odds: Will Byron +1400
It’s impossible to not consider Byron given his recent performance. He enters this one off his sixth win of the season – better than all other drivers. Now with a chance to put more of a gap between himself and the rest of the playoff field, he’ll surely be dialed in for this one.
NASCAR Odds: Todd Gilliand +6500
This one may be a bit of a stretch, but for those who have the stomach for it, Gilliand is a very intriguing play. Front Row Motorsports has an enviable track record on superspeedways. Michael McDowell won the 2021 Daytona 500, and David Ragan won at Talladega in 2013, with a slew of top-10 and top-5 finishes at plate tracks mixed in along the way.
Gilliand may not be the sexiest name, but he can handle himself as a plate racer. He’s finished inside the top-10 in each of the last two Cup Series races at Talladega, and in the lower series, he picked up a win in an ARCA race at Talladega, as well as two top-3 finishes in four Truck Series races here.
Bet Now On Todd Gilliand +6500!
