NASCAR Handicapping
And just like that, the finale of the NASCAR Cup series is upon us, with the 2023 campaign concluding at Phoenix Raceway this Sunday. And the four drivers in line for the title are Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, William Byron, and Kyle Larson. They make up the youngest group of four competing for the title since this playoff format was introduced in 2014.
Blaney and Byron are both in the Championship 4 for the first time in their careers, while Larson previously won in 2021. And all three manufacturers are represented in this group of four, so there’ll be some fast cars ready to go on Sunday.
And Byron won the Phoenix race back in March, which gives him a nice leg up on the competition. With that said, there’s no real standout in this group, as any of the four could conceivably walk away from Sunday’s race with the crown.
Blaney punched his ticket to the final four last Sunday with a clinching victory at Martinsville Speedway, making it through to the final four for the first time in his fifth appearance in the Round of 8. Over the last five weeks, he has four top 10 finishes, including a pair of wins.
2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race Odds: Kyle Larson +150
Larson was the first of the final group of four to qualify for the championship race, and that gives him an edge on the competition as he’s been able to focus on this race for weeks now. His team has been able to analyze the track and prepare for this race ahead of the competition. They certainly put forth their best effort at Homestead and Martinsville, but Phoenix has been at the top of the ledger for two weeks.
This has proven to be a significant edge in prior years, and Larson isn’t a drive who needs any added edge over his competitors to begin with. And he’s already seen success in Phoenix. He won the 2021 Cup Series Championship at Phoenix. In the Phoenix spring race, he was the fastest driver in practice. He led 200 laps before a caution late in the race ultimately cost him the victory.
Now he gets another chance for an even more significant win at Phoenix this season. His car was fast the first go around in Phoenix, and now with the added weeks of prep time for this race, his team will have him in great shape to return to the top of the NASCAR world.
2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race Odds: Ryan Blaney +250
In that spring race, Blaney quietly snuck into second place for the runner-up finish. He ran inside the top 10 for 312 laps. Byron got the win, but Blaney was within striking distance himself. Now he returns to Phoenix having led 90 or more laps in three of the last 10 Phoenix races, with eight top 10 finishes and six top five finishes in that span, and he’s been the runner-up in each of the last two Phoenix races, with four consecutive top fives at Phoenix.
NASCAR Odds: William Byron +250
While Larson is rightfully the clear favorite this time around, it was Byron who beat Larson in the spring race. The caution on lap 302 of 317 was a key factor in deciding that race, but it was Byron did his part in earning that victory.
Larson was leading those laps in the spring race, but Byron did remain on his heels throughout the race. He turned 314 laps inside the top 5 compared to 316 for Larson. They were a closer match than most realize in that race, and Byron could sneak out of Phoenix with another victory this weekend.
