Here’s a look at the remaining teams in contention to claim victory in Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
Kansas City Chiefs +120
It wasn’t that long ago that the national narrative was one of a broken Kansas City offense, and Patrick Mahomes having lost his tough. That’s all gone right out the window with the way the team’s played in recent months, with no win more impactful and memorable that last weekend’s all-time classic shootout with the Bills.
Kansas City looked down and out at multiple points – just in the last two minutes of the came – but mounted multiple scoring drives late to host the AFC title game for the NFL-record fourth consecutive year.
This is a team with a pedigree for winning the big game. They’ve been in back-to-back Super Bowls, and missed out on the third just narrowly. They have a chance to do so, and, if you were
going to hand pick an opponent of the teams remaining, the Bengals would be it. They have the clearest path, and they’re priced accordingly.
Los Angeles Rams +200
The Rams were a popular pick in the preseason to return to football’s summit, and here they are two wins away. The addition of Matthew Stafford has had the desired impact on the team the front office was hoping for, vaulting the team back into title contention, and adding another layer to Sean McVay’s offense as the field general Jared Goff never was.
The Rams are built to win a Super Bowl now. Don’t read too much into the home field advantage angle. That’s been an issue for them all season long. They’ve blocked non-Inglewood residents from even buying tickets to the NFC title game for fear of more 49ers fans being in attendance. The Super Bowl crowd would be even less favourable.
San Francisco 49ers +450
The 49ers came out of their victory over the Packers a little banged up, but it sounds like all of the key pieces will be in the lineup come Sunday. And that’s bad news for the Rams – San Francisco has beaten their divisional foe six consecutive times, including each of the two games since the Rams acquired Matthew Stafford. In fact, the last time the Rams beat the 49ers, Jared Goff threw for four touchdowns, and Alfred Morris was the 49ers lead running back.
If the 49ers can extend that streak to seven games, next up would be either the Chiefs or Bengals. Cincinnati would be an almost ideal opponent given their offensive line issues. That would allow San Francisco’s defensive line to tee off on Joe Burrow and cover some of their issues in the secondary. Or the Chiefs, who we’ve seen struggle with teams trying to run right at them.
Cincinnati Bengals +800
It’s been a magical season for the Bengals, who hadn’t won a playoff game in over 30 years, but have collectively found away to rally around the best leader they’ve had in those 30 years in Joe Burrow. There was a lot of criticism of the team’s selection of Ja’Marr Chase over an offensive lineman in the draft, but few are second-guessing that selection now, even after a game that saw the Titans sack Burrow nine times in a Bengals victory.
There’s something to be said about a team that comes in drowning in legitimate underdog sentiment. They can come out and give Kansas City a real slug fest, and have already put
together a win over these very Chiefs this season. But it’s next to impossible to imagine the Bengals giving the Chiefs a tougher test than the Bills did a weekend ago – one which Kansas City passed.
Here are the Super Bowl LVI odds in their entirety:
- Kansas City Chiefs +120
- Los Angeles Rams +200
- San Francisco 49ers +450
- Cincinnati Bengals +800
Here’s my Super Bowl LVI prediction: 49ers +450
