2027 AFC Championship Odds list Buffalo as the favorite at +395, with unbeaten Kansas City right behind at +440. I’ve got a problem with that order. The Bills needed 33 points to survive Las Vegas, while the Chiefs held the Chargers to six. At nearly identical prices, Kansas City is the team that interests me.
2027 AFC Championship Odds and Futures Breakdown
Josh Allen can rescue an offense when protection breaks down. Mahomes can do the same, but Kansas City is getting more help from its running game and defense.
Baltimore has quarterback uncertainty, New England is dealing with offensive-line injuries, and Jacksonville just surrendered 34 points to a division rival. There are challengers here, but several have work to do before I’d put money on them.
Senior Handicapper, CappersPicks.com
I’ve spent decades handicapping NFL football, and conference futures punish bettors who fall in love with quarterbacks while ignoring everything around them. A great QB helps, but so does an offensive line that blocks somebody and a defense that finishes games. I’m looking for teams equipped to survive January, at odds worth paying.

Odds updated: October 19, 2026. Prices may change and aren’t guaranteed at any individual sportsbook.
A winning $100 bet on Buffalo at +395 earns $395 profit. Kansas City at +440 pays $440 profit on the same bet, a $45 difference.
That extra return matters only if Kansas City’s chances justify the number.
Buffalo is the sportsbook favorite. Kansas City is the team I prefer. Those two things don’t have to agree.
2027 AFC Championship Odds: Buffalo vs. Kansas City
Buffalo Bills +395 — Allen Can’t Play Defense, Too
Buffalo improved to 5-1 with Sunday’s 33-30 victory over Las Vegas. Allen completed 23 of 33 passes for 255 yards and two TD’s, while James Cook rushed for 95 yards and the go-ahead score.
The Raiders kept answering.
Kirk Cousins threw for 313 yards and two TD’s, including a 44-yard connection with Tre Tucker that brought Las Vegas within three points late. Buffalo struggled to make Cousins uncomfortable.
Allen can overcome defensive mistakes better than almost anybody. That doesn’t make those mistakes harmless.
Buffalo’s cornerback depth concerns me, particularly against an AFC contender with multiple receiving threats. If the Bills can’t pressure opposing quarterbacks without exposing their secondary, January could bring another shootout.
I’m not paying the conference’s shortest price on the assumption that Allen will solve everybody else’s problems.
Kansas City Chiefs +440 — More Than the Mahomes Show
The 2027 AFC Championship Odds give Kansas City a better payout than Buffalo, and the Chiefs have shown me a more balanced team.
Kansas City reached 5-0 by beating the Chargers 22-6. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 128 yards and two TD’s, while Mahomes threw for 272 yards.
Defenses can’t sit back and wait for Mahomes anymore.
Walker forces opponents to respect the run. Bring extra defenders toward the line, and Mahomes gets opportunities against lighter coverage. Stay back, and Kansas City can keep pounding the football.
The Chiefs also recorded four sacks of Justin Herbert and kept Los Angeles out of the end zone. That’s meaningful support for a quarterback who doesn’t need much help to win.
The Chargers are 0-6, so I’m not treating one victory as proof Kansas City will dominate the conference.
But at +440, I prefer the Chiefs’ combination of quarterback play, rushing production and defensive pressure. They’re my first choice among the AFC favorites.
AFC Championship Contenders That Could Disrupt the Favorites
Baltimore Ravens +520 — Everything Changes With Lamar
Baltimore lost 13-10 at Cleveland with Tyler Huntley starting in place of Lamar Jackson. The Ravens struggled offensively, and a late FG decided the game.
Jackson’s availability changes everything.
With Jackson healthy, Baltimore can attack the edges and create running opportunities that don’t exist with a conventional pocket passer. Derrick Henry becomes more dangerous when defenders must account for Jackson keeping the football.
Without that threat, opponents can concentrate on Henry and force Baltimore into difficult passing situations.
The Ravens also need to stop surrendering late leads. Their secondary has struggled in important fourth-quarter possessions, and Jackson’s return won’t fix that defense.
At +520, I need better health and more reliable defensive execution before considering a ticket.
New England Patriots +570 — Maye Has Earned the Attention
Drake Maye threw three TD’s in New England’s 26-19 victory over the Jets, completing 18 of 32 passes for 235 yards. The Patriots improved to 4-2 despite losing offensive linemen during Sunday’s contest.
Maye deserves credit for handling the disruption. He found three different receivers for TD’s and kept the offense productive.
One afternoon of surviving pressure doesn’t solve the protection problem.
Kansas City and Denver can pressure quarterbacks without abandoning coverage. If Maye spends January escaping the pocket, New England’s offense will have a narrow margin for error.
Seattle exposed that weakness in last season’s Super Bowl loss. The Patriots need a healthier, more reliable line before I’d consider +570.
Jacksonville Jaguars +600 — The Offense Deserves Better
Trevor Lawrence threw four TD’s against Houston in London, and Jacksonville still lost 34-31. Travis Hunter contributed a touchdown reception and an interception, but the Jaguars couldn’t protect their lead.
Thirty-one points should have been enough.
Jacksonville is 4-2 and remains a serious AFC South contender. Lawrence has weapons capable of creating mismatches, and Hunter’s two-way contribution gives the Jaguars another dimension.
The defense remains the problem.
Houston drove into FG range late, and Ka’imi Fairbairn won it with a 49-yarder as time expired. Jacksonville can’t keep asking its offense to overcome those breakdowns.
At +600, I’d rather see defensive improvement than pay for offensive potential alone.
2027 AFC Championship Odds: Longer-Shot Contenders
Denver Broncos +1000 — A Defense Carrying Too Much Weight
Denver beat Seattle 17-14 in overtime behind an excellent defensive performance. The Broncos pressured the Seahawks, forced turnovers and gave Wil Lutz the opportunity to kick the winning FG.
The offense was another story.
Bo Nix and company produced just 168 total yards across regulation and overtime. Sean Payton taking over play-calling duties offers hope, but Denver needs more than hope against championship-caliber opponents.
That defense can’t be expected to deliver five sacks and three takeaways every week.
At +1000, Denver deserves attention because its defense can dictate games. Until the offense sustains drives against quality competition, though, I’m passing.
Cincinnati Bengals +1025 — Don’t Pay for the Quarterback Alone
Joe Burrow is why Cincinnati belongs in the conversation. When his protection holds, he can attack tight coverage and punish defenses that give him favorable matchups.
The question is how often he’ll have time to throw.
Cincinnati comes out of its bye with a trip to Baltimore, an excellent test of whether the offense is improving. I’ll be watching obvious passing downs, when opponents can pressure Burrow with four rushers and keep seven defenders in coverage.
Burrow can beat that look, but consistent pressure eventually kills drives.
At +1025, I need evidence the protection is improving. Burrow’s talent is established; the championship case around him isn’t.
Houston Texans +1700 — The Offense Is Finally Helping
Houston opened 0-4 but has won two straight, including Sunday’s 34-31 victory over Jacksonville in London. Stroud completed 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards and three TD’s.
The offense finally looks healthier and more capable of supporting its quarterback.
Woody Marks delivered a critical third-down gain on the winning drive, while Jawhar Jordan contributed a 25-yard rushing TD. Houston is finding ways to move the football without asking Stroud to do everything himself.
At 2-4, the Texans still have considerable ground to recover. Allowing 31 points isn’t a championship defensive performance, either.
But +1700 offers a different proposition from the favorites. If Houston continues improving and gets back into the AFC South race, that price could become interesting.
I’m watching the turnaround. I’m not paying for it prematurely.

What Does It Take to Win the AFC Playoffs?
The AFC’s best quarterbacks can punish almost any defensive mistake. Allen extends broken plays, Mahomes attacks coverage weaknesses, and a healthy Jackson forces opponents to defend the quarterback as a runner.
A conference champion may have to beat more than one of them.
That’s why I value defenses that can pressure quarterbacks with four rushers. Keeping seven defenders in coverage limits easy opportunities, especially against elite passing attacks.
Offensive consistency matters, too. Repeated three-and-outs give dangerous quarterbacks extra possessions.
Playoff positioning changes the assignment. The AFC’s No. 1 seed receives the only first-round bye and needs two postseason wins to take the conference. Every other qualifier needs three, with wild-card teams beginning on the road.
Comparing 2027 AFC Championship Odds at Sportsbooks
Once I’ve identified a team worth backing, I compare its available price at our recommended sportsbooks. Different sportsbooks can offer different returns on the identical selection.
Consider a hypothetical $100 Kansas City future. At +440, a winner earns $440 profit and returns $540 total. At +400, that same winner returns $500. That’s $40 surrendered for taking the shorter number.
Futures also tie up money for months, and early cash-out isn’t guaranteed. The potential return needs to justify both the football risk and the waiting.
If two sportsbooks offer different prices on the same team, taking the shorter one isn’t loyalty. You’re accepting less money for the same outcome.
Five Questions to Ask Before Betting NFL Futures
Before committing money to an NFL future, I want answers that go beyond a team’s record or quarterback. A good team can still be a lousy bet at the wrong price.
- Am I getting enough value at these odds?
At +400, a team needs to win 20% of the time to break even. If I don’t believe its true chances are higher, I’m passing. - How difficult is the road to the championship?
Division standings, remaining opponents and playoff seeding matter. A first-round bye and home-field advantage can substantially improve the path. - Can this team survive an unexpected injury?
Quarterback health matters most, but offensive-line, secondary and defensive-front depth can determine whether a contender survives January. - Is there a reason to bet now instead of waiting?
A favorable schedule might shorten the odds, while difficult upcoming games could create a better price. I don’t force an October futures bet. - Does this bet deserve a place in my bankroll?
Futures money can remain committed for months. I account for existing bets and never assume an early cash-out will be available.
