CFL Handicapping Insight
Handicapping this year’s CFL season presents unique challenges as we haven’t seen these players on the field in over a year, but the informed bettor has an adge over the public with the right insights.
Let’s take a look at the board with an eye out for value.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Hamilton Tiger-Cats +325
With all the time off, teams with consistency both in the coaching ranks, and on the roster will be at a big advantage over those who’ve endured turnover over the break.
The Tiger-Cats are one such team. After losing out to the Blue Bombers in the final of 2019, the Tiger-Cats return many of the key faces from that squad in 2021. They’ll also have the added bonus of hosting the Grey Cup final for an added boost should they make it that far, and extra motivation to strive to get there.
The additon of Patrick Levels to the defense will also provide a major boost on that side of the ball.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Saskatchewan Roughriders +450
In an unexpected move this offseason, the Roughriders released perennial Most Outstanding Defensive Player candidate Charleston Hughes. Highes was an All-Star in both seasons he played for the Roughriders.
Even so, the Roughriders are themselves perennial contenders for the Grey Cup as a model franchise in the league.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Calgary Stampeders +500
The extra time off will be good for Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell who has dealt with a lingering shoulder issue that caused him to miss some time in 2019. Kamar Jorden benefitted from the additional time off as well.
The team’s disappointing early exit in the West playoffs in 2019 has surely stung during the time off, so expect a motivated – and healthy – Calgary team to hit the field in 2021.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Winnipeg Blue Bombers +500
The Blue Bombers are defending Grey Cup champs, but the path to a repeat won’t be an easy one for them. Expect Winnipeg to come down a notch this season.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Toronto Argonauts +650
The Argonauts should be more competitive this season than they have been in past seasons, and the lack of crossover scheduling should benefit them.
The Argos didn’t let Hughes sit on the sidelines very long, signing him to a contract the day after he was released by the Roughriders. He’ll provide a strong boost to the team.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: B.C. Lions +900
While the lack of crossover scheduling will help some of the teams out East, the corresponding impact on teams out West will be felt as well. Easier schedules for the Eastern teams will make the crossover playoff berth that much more difficult to secure, with nine wins likely being the magic number, particularly hurting teams like the Lions who may not have enough firepower to compete with the West’s elite clubs.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Montreal Alouettes +900
The addition of William Stanback to the Alouettes gives the team a massive boost on the ground, and a terrific compliment to Vernon Adams Jr. on offense. Stanback should carve out around six yards per carry and find himself among the league leaders in rushing at the end of the year.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Ottawa Redblacks +1000
The Redblacks are another team that should show some improvements this year, and will also benefit from the lack of crossover scheduling. They’re likely a handful of roster improvements from becoming true contenders.
2021 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Edmonton +1100
The combo of Scott Milanovich and Trevor Harris could have led to some very interesting things in Edmonton. The two surely spent the bulk of the layoff digging into the playbook in preparation for the upcoming season, and would have been candidates for Coach of the Year and Most Outstanding Player, respectively.
But the uncertainty around the season led Milanovich to search for other opportunities, eventually accepting a position as quarterbacks coach under Frank Reich with the Indianapolis Colts. Now, Milanovich will have gone without coaching a single game for Edmonton after he was hired in December of 2019, and Edmonton’s working in a new head coach late in the process.
