CFL Handicapping Insight
This season, Vegas has Hamilton atop the futures board for the 108th Grey Cup So, heading into the season, can we expect the chalk to reign supreme, or is there some value down the board?
Let’s take a look.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Hamilton Tiger-Cats +300
The Tiger-Cats didn’t enjoy the end to their season, but they posted a league- and franchise-best 15-3 record en route to their first Grey Cup appearance since 2014, but failed to claim their first title since 1999. They accomplished what they did despite starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli going down with a season-ending injury after just six games played on the season.

With Masoli back on the field, returning to a team that led the CFL in scoring with 26.1 points per game to aid the league’s top scoring defense, the Ti-Cats are the clear favourite to win it all in 2020. If they can continue their dominance at home (10-0 record, including 36-16 victory in the East final), then year two under head coach Orlondo Steinauer will be another success.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Saskatchewan Roughriders +350
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have high expectations from their fan base every season, and this year, Vegas has placed some lofty expectations on them as well as they slot in right behind the favoured Tiger-Cats.
The team made a big splash already this offseason, replacing offensive coordinator Stephen McAdoo with former Eskimos head coach Jason Maas. Edmonton finished second in the CFL in total offense in 2019 – three spots ahead of Saskatchewan.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Winnipeg Blue Bombers +450
The Blue Bombers are coming off snapping a 29-year Grey Cup drought, but things are hardly settled in their quarterback room. The picture was crystal clear entering the season, but Matt Nichols finished the season on the sideline due to injury, while Zach Collaros, who began the season a Roughrider, was at the helm flanked by Chris Streveler in guiding the team to a Grey Cup victory. That leaves some major questions at the position which will be the main storyline around the team all offseason long.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Calgary Stampeders +500
Despite dealing with injuries at the quarterback position, with standout Bo Levi Mitchell sitting out until Week 12 following an injury sustained in Week 3, the Stampeders still managed to score the third-most points in the CFL last season. That helped them compile the third-best record in a successful season that ended when they ran into the eventual champion Blue Bombers in the West semifinal.
The Stampeders have qualified for the postseason for 15 consecutive seasons, and they’re a virtual lock to make that 16 in a row, extending the longest streak in franchise history.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Edmonton Eskimos +750
The Eskimos are one of the many CFL teams with a new head coach entering this season, as Scott Milanovich returns to the league. He won his most recent Grey Cup as head coach of the Argos in 2012.
With a roster that made it to the East Division final a year ago, the Eskimos should be ready to hit the ground running under Milanovich.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Montreal Alouettes +800
It wasn’t long ago the Alouettes effectively had an automatic bid the East final as one of the model franchises in the CFL. Now they’re struggling to find a general manager to sign on. Khari Jones did a lot of good in his time as head coach a year ago, and will return after signing a new contract.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: B.C. Lions +900
The only team in the West not to qualify for the postseason, the Lions made a change at head coach, brining in Rick Campbell. There’s plenty of talent on the roster, including 2017 MOP Mike Reilly at quarterback, so an improvement on last season’s 1-10 start seems likely.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Ottawa Redblacks +1200
Following an embarrassing three-win season, the Redblacks brought in a new head coach in Paul LaPolice to help turn things around. Task number one will be reinvigorating an offence that finished last in the league in points and yards per game.
2020 Grey Cup Futures Betting: Toronto Argonauts +1200
Another team needing a reboot following a season they’d like to forget, the Argos have a new head coach, bringing in former Stampeders quarterbacks coach Ryan Dinwiddie. Quarterback’s long been a position in need of fixing for this organization, so Dinwiddie – a former CFL quarterback himself – will surely have his eyes fixed on the position to start.
