With rosters in place and expectations set, here’s a review of the top 5 teams in contention for a national title, as well as a couple additional value plays that come in a little further down the list.
2020 College Football Playoffs Futures: Alabama Crimson Tide: 5/2
The legacy of this Alabama program under Nick Saban was dealt a significant blow in the national title game, taking a beating on the wrong end of a rout at the hands of Clemson. That loss has many wondering if we’re seeing the beginning of the end of this dynasty.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returns and should be plenty motivated to avenge that loss to close out 2018-19 campaign. He’s an instant Heisman Trophy contender. There’s some work to do on the defensive side, replacing a slew of players that entered the pro ranks. The team also has a long lineup of new assistant coaches, which is something worth monitoring.
2020 College Football Playoffs Futures: Clemson Tigers: 5/2
The Tigers shocked a lot of people with their convincing victory over Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide in the national title game. No one doubted Clemson could hang with Alabama, but to win as convincingly as they did while improving to 2-1 against Alabama on the biggest stage was very impressive.

Returning quarterback Trevor Lawrence had onlookers at spring practice thinking the sky is the limit for this offense. The team’s defensive line was the star of the show in the first round of the NFL draft, but that leaves plenty of talent to replace in that unit.
2020 College Football Playoffs Futures: Georgia Bulldogs: 6/1
Georgia hasn’t shied away from going toe-to-toe with Alabama the past two seasons. The team was relatively young a year ago, and will be again this season.
The defense had a lot of question marks entering the offseason, but the unit looked solid in the spring, whereas Jake Fromm and the offense may still have some work to do. To keep the Bulldogs in contention for a title.
2020 College Football Playoffs Futures: Michigan Wolverines: 14/1
It looked like Michigan was finally ready to take a major step forward under Jim Harbaugh before the team laid an egg in the regular-season finale against Ohio State, then got blown out by Florida in its bowl game. Even so, a 10-game winning streak is nothing to sneeze at.
Quarterback Shea Patterson will be back in town, helping to solidify things on the offensive side of the ball. On defense is where the question marks lie. The Wolverines will also play one of the most difficult schedules in the FBS.
2020 College Football Playoffs Futures: Ohio State Buckeyes: 14/1
New Buckeyes head coach would have a tough time complaining about the situation he steps into replacing Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes return 10 starters on defense, and were granted a waiver allowing Georgia transfer Justin Fields to play immediately.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Fields was the No. 1 overall prospect in 2018, and figures to be the day one replacement for Dwayne Haskins at quarterback. The team’s schedule is pretty friendly leading into a trip to Ann Arbor to close out the regular season.
More 2020 College Football Playoffs Futures:
Florida Gators: 45/1
The defense has been the Gators’ Achilles Heel for the better part of a decade, but that group appears ready to take a major step forward under Dan Mullen ,with Feleipe Franks and a talented group of pass-catchers giving the offense options.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish: 60/1
Notre Dame’s appearance in the College Football Playoff was certainly one the program would like to forget, but they also have to be happy to be returning a lot of the same faces that got the Irish into that position in the first place.
Quarterback Ian Book will once again lead the offense, while a talented and experience defensive line will key things on that side of the football. They have a tough schedule in front of them, but the Irish have the talent for a return trip to the final four.
