This Week on the PGA Tour
After consecutive weeks in Hawaii, the PGA Tour heads to the desert of California to begin its West Coast stretch at The American Express. This event will see the players attach the traditional three-course rotation of the PGA West Pete Dye Stadium Course, La Quinta Country Club, and the Nicklaus Tournament Course, then back to the Stadium Course for the final round on Sunday.
This event will forever be a memorable one for Nick Dunlap who won here as an amateur a year ago. He entered that event ranked 4,121st in the world rankings as a sophomore at the University of Alabama when he became the first amateur in 33 years to win on Tour, claiming a one-shot victory over Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Tacking on another victory in 2024, Dunlap enters this year’s event ranked 32nd in the world.
Nine of the top 25 players in the world and 19 of the top 50 players in the world are in the field this week, including world No. 2 Xander Schauffele, who’s coming off a breakthrough 2024 in which he won two major tournaments – the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Schauffele finished third at The American Express each of the past two years.
Joining Schauffele in this week’s field competing for a piece of an $8.8 million purse are world No. 7 Wyndham Clark and world No. 11 Patrick Cantlay, who’s an eight-time winner on Tour and finished second at the 2022 American Express.
Rounding out the remaining nine top 25 players in the field are No. 15 Billy Horschel, No. 18 Sungjae Im, No. 20 Sam Burns, No. 21 Justin Thomas, No. 23 Tom Kim, and No. 24 Tony Finau. Thomas had the best finish out of that group in this event last year when he tied for third.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had been in the field originally, but he withdrew as he deals with an injury he suffered in his kitchen over the holiday break. Scheffler hopes this time off is enough to allow his right hand to heal as he’s targeting a return in two weeks at Pebble Beach.

Cantlay is starting in La Quinta for the fifth consecutive season. He has three top-10 finishes here, including a second pace finish back in 2021. Since 2019 he’s 91-under par at this event. We saw his form improve as 2024 ended so a big 2025 could be in store for Cantlay.

Kim’s been the most accurate player off the tee in this field and that will be a great advantage on this course with plenty of water hazards in play. He was T6 at this event in 2023 when he carded a 23-under par. He’s third on Tour in shots gained: total on courses with favorable scoring conditions over the past three seasons, so we know he can go low.

This is a memorable event for Thompson as this is where he first found himself in the national spotlight back in 2023 when he lost in a shootout with Jon Rahm. His game’s been strong as he enters this one in good form, ranking fourth in Par 5 birdie-or-better rate and top five in shots gained: off the tee over his last 50 rounds.
