Here’s why I’m backing a NY PL bet below in my Canucks Rangers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Canucks vs. Rangers Gameday
Vancouver arrives at Madison Square Garden trying to stop a three-game losing streak. New York is looking to bounce back after its own winning streak ended. Neither team is particularly interested in another evening of explaining what went wrong.
The Vancouver Canucks visit the New York Rangers on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET on MSG and Sportsnet Pacific.
Manny Malhotra’s Canucks are 2-4-0.
New York has the stronger early record, but injuries have complicated its plans in goal.
Mike Sullivan’s Rangers are 4-2-0 and unbeaten through three home games. New York has established a physical identity while limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities.
Vancouver’s defensive problems have made its early schedule considerably more painful. The Canucks are also playing the second half of a back-to-back after visiting New Jersey.
That’s hardly the ideal preparation for a demanding opponent. The Rangers have their own adversity to manage, particularly after losing their top two goaltending options. Both coaching staffs have decisions to make.

Vancouver Canucks vs. New York Rangers Odds & Previous Games
The supplied NHL betting odds favor New York at -266 on the moneyline, with Vancouver returning +222. The Rangers are -1.5 at -103, while the Canucks are +1.5 at -120. The total is 5.5 goals, with the Over at -133 and Under at +107.
Vancouver lost 4-1 to New Jersey on Saturday after falling 7-2 to Carolina and 3-2 to Vegas. The Canucks previously defeated Calgary 4-1.
That’s a rough stretch by anybody’s standards.
New York dropped its latest game 3-1 to Washington. Before that, the Rangers defeated the Islanders 5-2, Utah 4-2, Detroit 2-0 and Tampa Bay 5-1.
The clubs split their two meetings last season, with each winning by shutout. Vancouver won 3-0 in December after New York took the earlier meeting 2-0. Apparently, scoring was optional whenever these teams got together.
The Rangers won both meetings the previous season.

Rangers Stats
New York has scored 17 goals through six games, averaging nearly three per contest. The Rangers have recorded 29 assists and four power-play goals. Their offensive production has come from several different combinations.
Defensively, New York has allowed 11 goals, an average of 1.83 per game. The Rangers have also registered 170 hits and 95 blocked shots.
Sullivan clearly hasn’t been preaching a gentle approach.
Alexis Lafrenière has four goals and six points. Mika Zibanejad has contributed five points, while Adam Fox has five assists.
Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eeli Tolvanen provide additional scoring options. J.T. Miller brings experience, physicality and an ability to win difficult puck battles. New York has useful depth beyond its leading scorers.
Shesterkin and Joonas Korpisalo are both sidelined with lower-body injuries.
Canucks Stats
Vancouver has scored 22 goals in six games, averaging 3.67 per contest. The Canucks have also collected 39 assists, reflecting their ability to move the puck effectively. Their attack has produced enough to be competitive on most nights.
The defensive numbers are considerably uglier. Vancouver has surrendered 29 goals, an average of 4.83 per game.
The penalty kill has also struggled, operating at 52.2 percent.
Elias Pettersson leads Vancouver with eight points, including two goals and six assists. Paul Cotter has supplied four goals, while Filip Hronek has contributed five assists.
The Canucks have blocked 96 shots, including 19 from Hronek. That willingness to sacrifice the body hasn’t consistently prevented opponents from creating dangerous chances.
Thatcher Demko remains unavailable with a hip injury. Filip Chytil is also sidelined with a shoulder problem. Malhotra could certainly use a shorter injury report and a few more dependable defensive shifts.
Vancouver has enough offensive talent to compete, but its defensive breakdowns continue to undermine that production.
Canucks vs. Rangers Goalie Matchup
Dylan Garand appears first in New York’s projected goaltending lineup. The 24-year-old has already recorded a shutout against Detroit this season. He now faces a significantly larger responsibility with the Rangers’ established options unavailable.
Garand made 11 saves in relief against Washington after Shesterkin was injured. Spencer Martin is listed as the likely backup.
New York has not formally confirmed Sunday’s starter.
Vancouver’s projected lineup lists Kevin Lankinen ahead of Leevi Meriläinen. Both have seen action during the Canucks’ opening stretch.
Meriläinen made 31 saves against New Jersey before Lankinen appeared in relief. Neither has been officially confirmed for the Rangers matchup. Vancouver’s defensive support will matter regardless of who starts.
Both teams have uncertainty between the pipes.

New York has been effective at limiting second chances around its crease. Vancouver needs more sustained offensive-zone pressure without sacrificing its defensive positioning.
The special-teams matchup also deserves attention. New York has been considerably more reliable while shorthanded, giving Sullivan another way to control difficult situations.
Discipline could become an important factor. Vancouver cannot afford to spend extended stretches defending against New York’s power play. That’s an excellent way to make an already difficult assignment worse.
Vancouver Canucks vs. New York Rangers bottom line: New York’s defensive structure and physical play meet Vancouver’s capable offense, with uncertainty in both creases adding another challenge.

Canucks Rangers Free Pick: Rangers -1.5
Here is my Canucks Rangers free pick: I’m taking New York Rangers -1.5 (-103). Paying -266 for the straight-up win doesn’t interest me nearly as much as getting close to even money on a two-goal margin. Sometimes the favorite is worth backing, but the price still needs to earn its keep.
My betting angle starts with Vancouver playing on consecutive days.
That’s a difficult assignment against a physical opponent that can force long shifts in the defensive zone.
I want New York setting the tempo immediately.
I’m betting the Rangers can exploit Vancouver’s short turnaround and create the separation this puck-line ticket needs.
The danger is New York’s unsettled crease. A replacement goaltender can turn a comfortable-looking favorite into an expensive headache, so the Rangers cannot afford careless turnovers. Their skaters need to make this a manageable assignment rather than a nightly audition for a miracle worker.
I’m also interested in the final ten minutes. If New York leads by one, Vancouver will eventually have to gamble. That opens the door for an odd-man rush or an empty-net goal, and either works perfectly well for my ticket. There’s no artistic judging on the puck line.
A 3-0 (maybe 3-1) victory pays the same whether New York controls the entire game or adds the insurance goal with an empty net. I’m comfortable accepting that risk for the better return. My NHL betting system has me leaning on the Rangers puckline.
