Canadiens vs. Capitals Gameday
The Montreal Canadiens visit the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Both Eastern Conference clubs are playing their second game in as many nights.
Martin St. Louis has Montreal at 3-2-1, while Spencer Carbery’s Washington club sits at 3-3-0. Neither team has established much separation in the early standings.
October hasn’t exactly been a victory parade.
Both clubs face a quick turnaround, with Montreal seeking momentum and Washington trying to stop its slide.
The Canadiens arrive with consecutive victories, including Tuesday’s shootout win over Buffalo. Washington returns home after losing at Carolina that same evening.
Montreal has found ways to collect points in tight games. The Capitals have struggled to finish their recent opportunities. There’s plenty for both coaching staffs to address before the puck drops.
Wednesday offers an early test of which team handles the demanding schedule better.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Washington Capitals Odds & Previous Games
The opening moneyline favors Washington at -131, with Montreal at +110. The Capitals are -1.5 (+182) on the puck line, while the Canadiens are +1.5 (-228). The total is 6.5 goals, with Over -118 and Under -105.
Montreal beat Buffalo 4-3 in a shootout and Detroit 1-0 in another shootout. Its preceding defeats came against Nashville 5-2, Carolina 6-4 and Pittsburgh 6-5.
Apparently, sixty minutes isn’t always enough excitement.
Washington lost 4-2 to Carolina and 5-3 to Seattle in its last two outings. Earlier victories included Pittsburgh 5-3 and the New York Rangers 3-1. The Capitals have struggled to string together complete performances.
Washington won two of three meetings with Montreal during the 2025-26 regular season. The Capitals also eliminated the Canadiens in five games during the 2025 playoffs.
There’s some unfinished business in that history.

Capitals Stats
Washington has scored 19 goals through six games, averaging 3.2. The Capitals have also recorded 27 assists. Their offense has shown enough scoring potential to trouble opponents when its puck movement clicks.
Defensively, Washington has allowed 16 goals, averaging 2.7 per contest. The Capitals have blocked 103 shots through their opening six games.
At least somebody is willing to get in the way.
Ryan Leonard has produced six points in six appearances. Boone Jenner has scored three goals and provided an important presence among the forwards.
Tom Wilson has contributed five points and 19 hits. His physical approach creates difficult shifts for opposing defenders. Nobody needs a second invitation to keep their head up around him.
Washington has scored twice on the power play, leaving room for improvement with the extra attacker.
Canadiens Stats
Montreal has scored 18 goals through six games, averaging three per contest. The Canadiens have recorded 28 assists. Their offense has shown creativity despite some uneven results.
Montreal has allowed 19 goals, averaging 3.2 against. Defensive-zone mistakes have occasionally erased otherwise promising stretches.
That’s a costly way to learn puck management.
Nick Suzuki has collected eight points, including three goals and five assists. His playmaking remains an important part of Montreal’s attack.
Lane Hutson has five assists, while Cole Caufield has scored three goals. Both can create opportunities in limited space. Their chemistry gives Montreal dangerous options when the game opens up.
The Canadiens need to reduce giveaways and spend less time defending extended shifts.
Canadiens vs. Capitals Goalie Matchup
Washington used Logan Thompson against Carolina on Tuesday, when he made 31 saves. The Capitals have also relied on Charlie Lindgren during the opening stretch. Wednesday’s starting assignment remains unconfirmed.
Montreal has received strong recent work from Jacob Fowler. He stopped 30 shots against Detroit and made 14 saves against Buffalo.
Those performances helped keep Montreal competitive.
The Canadiens also have Jakub Dobes available as an option. With both clubs playing on consecutive nights, the final goaltending decisions deserve attention.
Washington has allowed 2.7 goals per game, compared with Montreal’s 3.2. The Capitals have been steadier defensively, although their recent losses exposed problems managing dangerous possessions.
Neither bench will enjoy another evening of defensive-zone chaos.
Montreal’s speed can challenge Washington’s coverage when the Canadiens enter the zone with control. The Capitals counter with a physical forward group capable of generating pressure below the goal line. Both approaches demand sound positioning from the opposing defense.

The matchup could hinge on how effectively each team clears rebounds and handles traffic near the crease. Neither club can afford to give away repeated scoring chances.
Special-teams discipline will also matter, particularly with both teams facing a short turnaround.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Washington Capitals bottom line: Both teams have enough offensive talent to punish mistakes, making disciplined defensive execution especially important.

Canadiens Capitals Free Pick: Canadiens ML +110
Here is my Canadiens Capitals free pick: I’m taking Montreal ML +110. Washington gets the home-ice premium, but I’m not convinced the Capitals deserve to be favored against a Montreal club that’s starting to find its footing. Sometimes the better sweater costs more than the better bet. Washington has dropped three of its last five and struggled to cash in on power-play opportunities. Montreal doesn’t need a perfect road performance to exploit that.
It needs to avoid handing the Capitals easy chances.
At plus money, I’m backing Montreal to turn Washington’s mistakes into enough offense to steal the road victory.
Both teams played Tuesday, so neither gets to use tired legs as an exclusive excuse. The difference for me is the price: the Canadiens offer a better return in a matchup that looks considerably closer than the home favorite’s billing suggests.
Montreal must protect the puck through the neutral zone and stay disciplined around its own net. Give Washington too many freebies, and even a struggling power play eventually remembers what it’s supposed to do.
I expect the Habs to have their chances.
Habs ML +110. Washington can keep the prettier billing; I’m buying the team that doesn’t need it.
