The Jets have officially lost their hold on a playoff spot, but can regain it this week with a win over the scorching hot Lions.
The Jets have battled admirably this season, including two covers and an outright win over Buffalo. They’re on their 3rd quarterback this season and that might actually have been the ideal outcome looking at their depth chart. This week is a get right game after dropping consecutive games to playoff shoe-ins Minnesota and Buffalo.
The Lions are one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 5 of 6 and averaging 37 ppg in their last two. Their playoff push is suddenly very realistic with Seattle dropping TNF to the Niners and the Giants in a tenuous position. After starting the season 1-6, it would be a miraculous recovery to play beyond week 18.
New York Jets
Mike White was blasted by the Buffalo front and though he had to leave the game briefly, gutted out the rest of the game. The Jets actually outgained the Bills 309-232 in their 20-12 loss on the road, so we can pull positives from a loss.
Zonovan Knight seems good for one to two big WPA plays per game and although we didn’t see the explosiveness, he did score a touchdown on a tough run. He draws the Lions this week, so we should expect his explosiveness to return.
Garrett Wilson continues to justify his draft position and has formed a nice rapport with White, but Elijah Moore has risen from the dead as well, garnering 10 targets. The Jets offense in terms of EPA/play has been average since White took over, but that is massive improvement over the offense under Wilson’s tenure.
The defense has been excellent, and Sauce Gardner is a large reason why. Stefon Diggs was held to 37 yards on 3 catches and DVOA says they’re the 6th best passing D. They’re going to take away a lot of what the Lions want to do.
Detroit Lions
The Lions offense has never broken stride this season and sit 5th in points scored per game and 7th in overall offense by DVOA. In fact, they’ve been so successful, I’ve seen rumblings as to whether the Lions would take a QB in this upcoming draft or not.
Swift’s return has been brought along slower than I thought, but the backfield remains impactful. The Jets are top-10 in rushing D, so this won’t be an easy matchup.
Jameson Williams returned with a bang, scoring on a 41 yard connection and adds another dangerous weapon to this Lions receiving corps. Amon-Ra will likely draw the Sauce coverage, so it could come down to Williams and Chark.
So, we know the Lions offense is good, but the defense has made massive strides. In their excellent run of 6 games, the passing defense has actually creeped towards the median among teams, ranking 15th in EPA/dropback allowed since week 9.

While the Jets are favored, I think public sentiment is that Detroit is the better team. A lot of that is influenced by Win-Loss, but I think that these teams are far closer in pedigree.
The Lions are due for a cooler and the Jets have the defense to shut down the Lions offense, or at least limit it in such a way that the defense won’t be able to overcome.
As road underdogs, the Lions are 3-2 ATS, failing to cover by an average of 2.9 points.
As home favorites, the Jets are 1-0 and covered by 13 in that game. Now is the right time to sell the Lions and take the Jets at home.
