Points would appear to be at a premium when the New Orleans Saints visit the Cleveland Browns in a game with a betting total of just 32 points. Both clubs are coming off wins, but neither scored more than 21 points last Sunday.
Saturday’s game means a lot more for the Saints for the simple reason that even at 5-9, they are just a game out of 1st place in the absolutely atrocious NFC South. The Browns are two games out of the wild card with three to play – and with four teams to jump so it’s just a matter of time before Cleveland is eliminated.
New Orleans Saints
Maybe the biggest adjustment for the Saints this Saturday will be the weather, with temperatures forecast to be in the teens and with a strong chance of snow and gusty conditions.
In order to have success in Cleveland, it looks like New Orleans will need to be able to run the football. There are two problems with that – 1) the Browns are one of the best running teams in the NFL and 2) the Saints rank 21st with 111.3 ypg on the ground
Saints QB Andy Dalton was just 11-17 in last week’s 21-18 win over Atlanta, but he did have his fourth straight game without an interception – something that had a problem earlier in the season. We shall see if Dalton can keep that turnover free trend going in windy and cold conditions.
The New Orleans defense welcomes the expected arctic conditions this weekend, as they have held five straight opponents to 20 points or less. Cleveland has only averaged 11.5 ppg their last two games as well.
Cleveland Browns
Cleveland has gone 2-1 since Deshaun Watson returned from his 11-game suspension even though they’ve averaged just 16.7 ppg over that span. Watson has been decent (60.9% completion, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) but has also looked like a player that hasn’t played the last two years either.
Watson probably won’t have a breakout statistical game on Saturday with the weather, but Cleveland can lean on their running game that averages nearly 150 rush yards on the ground.
Cleveland’s top RB Nick Chubb (foot) is on the injury report, and he also only has one game with over 100 yards rushing in his last six outings.
The Saints are very good against the pass (195.1 ypg) but will give up some yards on the ground (132.6).
