Dolphins vs. 49ers Gameday
Miami stays on the West Coast Sunday for a Week 2 visit to San Francisco at Levi’s Stadium. The Dolphins are 0-1 after losing 27-13 in Las Vegas, while the 49ers opened their season by beating the Rams 27-7 in Melbourne. FOX has the broadcast at 4:25 PM ET.
Jeff Hafley’s Dolphins showed some life as their opener progressed, but the offense never completely settled in. Malik Willis made plays with his arm and legs, yet five sacks and too many stalled possessions left Miami chasing the Raiders most of the afternoon.
Going from Las Vegas to San Francisco isn’t exactly the NFL’s idea of a recovery program.
Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers had a much better opening act. San Francisco controlled the Rams for long stretches, ran for 174 yards and held Los Angeles scoreless over the final three quarters.
Now the 49ers finally come home after opening the season roughly 8,000 miles away in Australia. Miami stayed in California rather than flying back across the country, which at least removes one ugly travel variable from an already difficult assignment.

The opening numbers made San Francisco a massive favorite, with the 49ers around -941 on the moneyline and Miami approximately +632. San Francisco opened -13.5 with the total at 45.5.
The market hasn’t found much reason to rescue Miami. San Francisco remains a 13.5-point favorite at many sportsbooks, with the moneyline now around -1000 and Miami returning roughly +655. The total has dipped slightly to 45 at some shops.
Miami’s 27-13 loss in Las Vegas never seriously threatened to become a shootout. The Dolphins scored one offensive touchdown, got another score from Willis on the ground and finished the afternoon with 259 net yards.
San Francisco’s opener was even friendlier to Under bettors.
The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7 after allowing their only touchdown in the second quarter. Miami won the most recent meeting 29-17 in 2024, while San Francisco won 33-17 the last time these teams met at Levi’s Stadium in 2022.

San Francisco produced 379 total yards against Los Angeles, and the balance was difficult to miss. The 49ers finished with 205 net passing yards and 174 on the ground while possessing the football for nearly 34 minutes.
Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Christian McCaffrey rushed for 68 yards, Kaelon Black added 65, and Purdy chipped in another 29 as San Francisco consistently stayed ahead of the chains.
Seven-of-12 on third down is a pretty efficient way to keep the opposing offense unemployed.
The defense was even better. San Francisco limited the Rams to 290 total yards, 15 first downs and two conversions on nine third-down attempts while holding Los Angeles scoreless after halftime.
Fred Warner returned to regular-season action after his 2025 ankle injury, while Renardo Green intercepted Matthew Stafford.
Nick Bosa also returned to a defense that looks considerably different with its stars actually available.
There has been some movement on the injury front this week. Jake Tonges was placed on injured reserve, while Kaelon Black and Keion White have been limited in practice.
Dolphins Stats
Miami’s first game under Hafley ended with a 27-13 loss to Las Vegas, although the Dolphins improved after a shaky start.
Willis completed 15 of 27 passes for 220 yards and added 39 rushing yards with a touchdown.
The running game outside Willis never really got moving. De’Von Achane finished with 36 yards on 11 carries, while Miami’s offense repeatedly found itself dealing with pressure and difficult down-and-distance situations.
The five sacks were particularly expensive.
Willis still produced several explosive completions, with Demario Douglas leading Miami with five catches for 94 yards. The Dolphins also received a 79-yard kickoff return from Jaylen Wright but came away empty when the ensuing possession ended with a missed field goal.
Defensively, Miami improved as the game progressed and intercepted Kirk Cousins twice. Dante Trader Jr. had one of those picks, while rookie corner Chris Johnson contributed 11 tackles and two pass breakups.
The injury report has become more important heading into San Francisco.
Chop Robinson suffered a concussion during practice and has been ruled out, Ronnie Harrison missed both Wednesday and Thursday with a hamstring injury, while Willis practiced fully despite a toe issue.

Dolphins vs. 49ers QB Matchup
Brock Purdy opened his season with an efficient afternoon against the Rams, completing 25 of 34 passes while directing three touchdown drives through the air. His lone mistake was an interception, but otherwise he kept San Francisco’s offense moving comfortably.
Purdy also benefited from San Francisco’s running game doing plenty of the dirty work.
That balance is a lousy combination for Miami. If McCaffrey and Black keep the 49ers ahead of schedule, Purdy doesn’t need to spend Sunday forcing throws into tight windows or chasing explosive plays that aren’t there.
Willis can create with his legs, but five sacks made that creativity considerably more expensive in Las Vegas.
Malik Willis completed 15 of 27 passes in his Dolphins debut and produced Miami’s only touchdown with a 14-yard run. He also threw one interception and spent too much of the afternoon dealing with Raiders pressure, making life considerably harder on an already struggling Miami offense.
San Francisco represents a significant jump in defensive difficulty.
Bosa and Warner are back in the lineup, the 49ers just held Los Angeles to 290 yards, and Willis will need cleaner protection if Miami wants to avoid another afternoon spent fighting uphill.
Miami Dolphins vs. San Francisco 49ers bottom line: Miami couldn’t find much scoring room against Las Vegas, and graduating from that defense to a healthy San Francisco unit feels like a fairly cruel Week 2 promotion.

The 49ers can shorten this game themselves. Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black helped San Francisco pile up 174 rushing yards, giving Kyle Shanahan little reason to turn a two-touchdown favorite into a track meet. If the 49ers get control early, the clock becomes our friend.
Miami’s offense doesn’t need another problem, but San Francisco’s defense qualifies as one.
Malik Willis was sacked five times in Las Vegas and Miami generated only 13 points despite getting a 79-yard kickoff return that started one drive inside Raiders territory. The Dolphins also lost edge rusher Chop Robinson to a concussion in practice this week. That makes it easier for San Francisco to lean on the run and control possession.
The danger is San Francisco doing too much of the scoring itself.
Plus, a 13.5-point favorite paired with a 45.5 total leaves Miami needing meaningful participation for the Over to become comfortable. I don’t trust the Dolphins to provide enough.
