The two squads flexed their way into the prime time slot for Sunday Night Football in Week 14. With both teams looking to bounce back after a loss in Week 13, we could see a very competitive match-up between the number 5 and 6 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
There has been a lot of talk, mostly prior to this season, on whether or not the Dolphins picked the wrong quarterback. Was Justin Herbert their guy? Or was Tua Tagovailoa worth building around?
While Herbert is a fine pivot in all, Tagovailoa has had a tremendous year thus far even with his time spent on the shelf. Now we’ll see these two go head-to-head for the first time in two years.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins saw their 5-game win streak come to a screeching halt this past week after a 33-17 loss to the 49ers. Keep in mind, the 49ers do have one of the top defensive units in the league but Miami still allowed a Jimmy Garoppolo-less offence put up 33 on them.
With the ball, Miami managed just 33 yards on the ground in this contest which is down from the 89.7 they average on a weekly basis. On the season, they’re just one of five teams that is averaging less than 100 rushing yards per outing but it’s not surprising when you consider they’re in the bottom five in terms of carry rate across the NFL.
In the air, Tua was picked off for the first time since Week 4 after throwing two interceptions against San Francisco making it five on the year for the quarterback.
All that being said, the Chargers are no where close to what 49ers’ defence is and Tua will take advantage of that. Los Angeles is well inside the bottom 10 in terms for yards allowed per game and are giving up the third most points per game at 25.8 against an outing. Over his past 5 starts, Tagovailoa has put up more 2 or more touchdowns on the board in 4 of those games with at least 3 majors in 3 of those contests.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers found themselves on the losing end of the result for the third time in their last four games. They were outscored 17-7 in the second half as they lost 27-20 on Sunday. In that Week 13 game, Los Angeles didn’t even score an offensive major until nearly the halfway mark of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Justin Herbert was sacked 5 times and threw for a completion rate of just 59.6% against a sub-.500 Las Vegas Raiders team, his second lowest since Week 3.
Against teams at or over .500, the Chargers are losing by an average of 6.5 points after averaging just 22.7 on the board per contest. That adds to the fact that they are 6-2 against teams with a losing record, as they should be, but are 0-4 versus squads with a winning record.

While I don’t think that the Chargers will win this one, I’m digging the over this week as I expect this one to be a shootout. If there was ever a time for Herbert to show up and show out, this would be the week to do so young man.
