The Jacksonville Jaguars will travel to Houston to take on the Texans in an AFC South matchup this week.
The division is still up for grabs late in the year, and even though the Jags cannot win it, they could still play a role in who does with a win here.
Jacksonville comes into this one on an eight game losing streak and would love a chance to end the streak against a division rival.
The Texans have been up and down this year, but they are still tied with the Tennessee atop the division and in position to make the playoffs. Last week’s 22-17 victory in Indianapolis was a huge boost in their hopes of winning the South.
The Jaguars seemed to have built a foundation for winning last year, and many people believed they were poised to take a huge leap forward in 2016.
Obviously that did not take place, and it seems like another typical Jags season this year. They have lost eight games in a row, including a 25-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home last week.
Jacksonville has a relatively strong defense, but their offense is one of the worst in the league. They rank 27th in scoring offense, putting up only 18.5 points per game.
Gaining only 332.7 yards per game, they rank 23rd in total offense and rank 21st in both passing and rushing yards per game.
On the other side of the ball, the Jags are 5th in the NFL in total defense (316.4 yards allowed) but 27th in scoring defense (26.0 points allowed).
Houston seemed to be in somewhat of a tailspin midway through the year. They lost three games in a row before last week’s huge victory over the Colts.
It’s hard to tell at this point whether they have really righted the ship, or they were just better than a bad Indianapolis team on Sunday. Even with their struggles, they will still make the playoffs if they win out.
Like their opponents this week, Houston is led by a strong defense and absolutely no offense. They rank 28th in both total offense (316.4 yards per game) and scoring offense (17.6 points per game).
Quarterback Brock Osweiler has not panned out like the team had hoped; he has thrown for 2,656 yards, 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Houston ranks 6th in yards allowed (318.5) and 13th in points allowed (21.1).
NFL Betting Trends:
- Jaguars are 1-4 ATS in last 4 games
- Jaguars are 3-5-1 ATS in last 9 games on the road
- Texans are 5-1 SU in last 6 games at home
- Texans are 4-1 ATS in last 5 games against Jaguars
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Texans -5.5
The final three games are crucial for the Texans, and they know what is on the line.
They play Cincinnati next week and Tennessee to close the season in a game that will probably decide the AFC South.
As long as they don’t get caught looking past Jacksonville, they should win this one easily.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Jacksonville 13 – Houston 24
It’s hard to see any hope for the Jags at this point. They are likely to fire head coach Gus Bradley at the end of the year and are just trying to get through the rest of 2016.
I don’t expect them to put up much of a fight.
