Jacksonville is in an interesting spot where their week 17 Jaguars vs. Houston game doesn’t mean anything. It’s not for the reason fans are usually used to though with their team already eliminated from playoff contention and just working on draft positioning.
Instead it’s next week that is for all the marbles for the Jags, who play the Tennessee Titans in the regular season finale for the AFC South. Next week’s game will decide the division regardless of anything that happens this Sunday.
Houston did Jacksonville a favor by beating the Titans last week, but that was just the Texans’ second win of the year. The Texans just need to lose one of their last two games to clinch the #1 pick in next year’s draft, but next week is a division rivalry game as well against the Colts. The Texans might as well play for one last win in front of the home fans on Sunday.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have put a nice little run together with three straight wins, and they have extra rest with last week’s 19-3 victory over the Jets being on the Thursday night game.
Last week Jacksonville won with defense, holding the Jets to just 227 yards. The week prior the Jaguars showed they could win in a shootout as well, coming back to beat Dallas 40-34.
If the Jaguars want to truly prove they’ve turned the corner, they have to beat a Texans team that has been a thorn in their side the last two seasons. Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence is 0-3 vs. Houston, throwing 3 INTs in his NFL debut in 2021 and being shut down 13-6 in week five earlier this year.
Houston Texans
The October 9th victory over the Jaguars was the first and only time the Texans had won this season prior to last week’s 19-14 win in Tennessee that snapped a 9-game losing streak.
Houston’s win last week should be taken with a grain of salt as the Titans are in an epic five game slide to close out the season and only threw the ball for 99 yards with rookie QB Malik Willis. The Texans themselves had just 285 total yards, which doesn’t win a lot of games usually.
Even though Tennessee is in a rut right now, the Texans have also played well the last three games overall. They really could have – if not should have – beat Dallas (27-23 L) in week 14 and Kansas City (30-24 OT L) in week 15.
