The Detroit Lions didn’t do their playoff chances any favors in last week’s 37-23 loss to the Panthers. The Lions are still one of four teams tied with seven wins for the final wild card spot, but that makes Sunday’s game with the Bears a must win.
Chicago is just 3-12 and on an 8-game losing streak, but in many ways this has been a successful year as far as the future goes. The Bears are currently in line for the #2 pick in the draft, and seem to have found their QB of the future in Justin Fields.

You never want to say this part out loud, but the Bears are playing almost perfectly for a team that really doesn’t benefit from wins this time of year. Chicago is playing competitively like in their 25-20 loss to the Eagles two weeks ago, but still losing to help their draft stock.
Chicago really has no incentive to win the second half of the season, as evidenced by their first meeting with the Lions in week 10 when they took a 24-10 lead into the 4th quarter and Detroit still won 31-30.
Fields had 167 yards passing and 2 TDs vs Detroit in the first meeting and added 147 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. The Lions gave up a whopping 320 passing yards to Carolina last week, and with help from Fields (1,011 yards) the Bears are the #1 rushing team in the NFL (179.7).

The big question heading into week 17 is if Detroit is indeed going to Detroit? We were down on the Lions after a 1-6 start, bought back into them when they won six of seven, but now have concerns again after the big loss to Carolina last Saturday.
Detroit needs to get back on track Sunday and hand Chicago their ninth straight loss, in the process setting up a showdown with Green Bay in the regular season finale that could have some major wild card implications.
The Lions are chasing Washington – who needs to lose at least one of their two remaining games against Cleveland and Dallas – and Seattle who has to fall to either the Jets or Rams. Basically Detroit needs some help to get into the playoffs, and really did a number on themselves in last week’s loss to Carolina.
The good news is Detroit should be able to easily dispatch Chicago, who is decimated by injury on both sides of the ball. The Lions did carry the ball 31 times for just 95 yards in the first meeting with the Bears though, and Jared Goff was 19/26 for 236 yards and a TD – good but not great.
