The Panthers are looking for positives in a season where the best developments were ousting their head coach and waiting for the draft. The Broncos are desperate to start seeing returns on their expensive offseason.
What do you say for the Panthers? They’ve fired Matt Rhule, changed QBs multiple times and traded away Christian McCaffrey. It’s a lost season in Charlotte and Panthers fans I know don’t have much left to look at this year. They’re all on to the draft and doing their research on this crop of quarterbacks.
Denver’s season is mystifying, not because Russ has been bad, but that the offense has been so bad that the team with an elite defense only has three wins. Their head coach has already ceded play calling duties, which is usually the penultimate move before getting fired. Russ will have a lot of say in whether or not Hackett makes it to 2023.
Carolina Panthers
Baker Mayfield has looked awful in all games he has started this year and last week was no different. The Panthers managed to score 3 points on the Ravens in Baltimore en route to a loss.
Prior to being shutout on Sunday, D’Onta Foreman had played well enough that he will get significant playing time next season. Panthers ball carriers draw a tough matchup with Denver this Sunday.
Unfortunately, as long as PJ Walker remains out and Baker Mayfield under center, the Panther offense is severely limited in what they can do. In games started by Mayfield the Panthers have posted 16 ppg.
In the face of their struggles, the Panther defense has performed well. They still have good pieces and Steve Wilks was at one time their defensive coordinator so there is familiarity. They’ve allowed 14 points per game in their last two, only reaching a 1-1 record. DVOA ranks them a mere 21st though, which means regression is likely on the horizon.
Denver Broncos
If you listen closely, you can hear Russ quietly whispering “Let’s Ride”. The offense to date has averaged 14.7 ppg and generally disappointed. Their offensive-minded head coach has failed to generate a spark and has now given up play calling duties. Maybe we’ll see a bump?
Russ has been the center of attention with the draft capital surrendered to acquire him and the large extension they signed him to. The offense as a whole is 31st in success rate, which tells us they’re not stringing together drives. The running game is a blackhole and not getting the offense into manageable downs and distances.
The defense is the opposite story though. DVOA says the Broncos are a top 5 defense and they’ve shut down opposing passing offenses. Patrick Surtain, Justin Simmons and the pass rush have been a formidable task for Bronco opponents. They’ve been more vulnerable against the run, but have surrendered just over 100 ypg.

The total may be the lowest we’ve seen in years in the NFL, but we have plenty of justification.
