Estadio Azteca brings us a reminder of one of the best regular season games ever. Enter Arizona and San Francisco.
I was living in Tokyo in 2018 when Monday Night Football visited Mexico City. I missed what some consider to be the greatest regular season game ever when the Chiefs and Rams played a 54-51 slugfest.
Arizona and San Francisco aren’t the dynamos that took the field in 2018, but it figures to still be an entertaining game.
The Cardinals took down the Rams to avenge their week 3 loss. They need to keep winning to avoid missing the 2022 playoff train.
San Francisco goes as Jimmy G goes, which is a week-to-week proposition. It’ll be up to me to decide which version shows up this week.
Arizona Cardinals
That Arizona won so convincingly with backup Colt McCoy should be a bigger story in my estimation. Maybe because he wasn’t asked to do too much, with James Connor punching in 2/3 team touchdowns on the day.
However, the Cardinals profile better running than passing from an EPA standpoint. It begs the question of if they’ll continue this formula. Kyler was announced as day-to-day yesterday, so we’ll need to keep an eye on his status as the week progresses.
DeAndre Hopkins received 14 targets on Sunday with Rondale Moore trailing just behind with 13. Backups tend to rely on their best options, so I’ll assume they continue to do so moving forward. Arizona ranks a putrid 28th in offense by DVOA, just ahead of the likes of Carolina and Houston.
The Cardinals shut down the Rams, although their offense has been limping along and also started backup John Wolford. San Francisco is a stark difference offensively in that they can run the ball, and they do it very well. Arizona ranks 7th in pressure rate and has generated 7 interceptions.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are on a two game winning streak and have started to get pieces back from the IR. Elijah Mitchell out-carried McCaffrey and did it on an efficient 4.9 ypc. The Chargers have been an absolute sieve against the run, so Arizona’s 16th rush D by DVOA is a much tougher assignment.
Surprisingly, the Niners rank 7th in passing offense by DVOA, not exactly something you would have guessed at bar trivia. What it tells us is that even against tough opponents, the attack should hold up. Arizona is 23rd in passing yards allowed per game, yet another sign SF should succeed through the air.
It’s all about what they’re pressed to do however. If Arizona is unable to score points, the Niners will happily bleed the clock, which is a different story towards the total.
San Francisco is top 10 in defense and even 3rd in rush D. James Conner will have a much tougher day, so whether Kyler plays or not is paramount on the side we take. San Francisco generates the fourth-most pressure in the league, so if McCoy starts, we might be siding with the Bay Area.

I’ve mentioned it ad nauseam, but which side we take is highly dependent on if Kyler starts, so I’ll frame this as an if-then clause.
IF Kyler starts, THEN we take Arizona because 8 points is far too many to lay on a neutral field.
IF McCoy starts, THEN we take the under. Sure, we could side with SF but again, we’re not entirely sure which version of Jimmy G shows up.
We should know by Friday which scenario will take place.
