2019 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Roster Changes
The Oakland Raiders have continued to make significant changes to the roster. Their biggest acquisition this past offseason was getting Antonio Brown.
They also got Tyrell Williams to help out Derek Carr and the deep passing game.
The Raiders had three picks in the first round in this past NFL Draft and they used those picks to draft Clelin Ferrell, Josh Jacobs, and Johnathan Abram.
Obviously, these picks and the rest of the picks in the NFL Draft will lay the foundation for the future of the franchise.
2019 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Offense
Quarterback Derek Carr is still in charge of the offense and he’ll have a little more help around him with Brown and Williams as his starting wide receivers.
Carr will also have a new halfback in the backfield in Alabama rookie Josh Jacobs. He’ll look to spark the running game and take some pressure off of Carr.
The big key is the offensive line. The offensive line was really bad last year and the Raiders looked to upgrade it by signing Trent Brown this past offseason.
The hope for them is that will shore up their offensive line enough because they didn’t draft any offensive linemen in the draft this past April.
2019 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Defense
The Raiders put in a lot of draft capital on the defensive side of the ball. Their first pick they used it on defensive end Ferrell and with their 27th pick they picked safety Abram.
Plus, they grabbed two other cornerbacks in Trayvon Mullen and Isaiah Johnson and they went back to the defensive line by drafting Maxx Crosby and Quinten Bell.
In fact, their draft sort of seemed similar to what the Seahawks have done in some of their past drafts. In particular, with the picks of Johnson and Crosby.
Johnson is a big armed, lanky corner back and Crosby had the fastest three cone time. Some of the attributes the Seahawks look for in players.
The Raiders also signed Vontaze Burfict and Brandon Marshall at linebacker. Gruden signing Burfict isn’t that big of a shock. Gruden always seemed to like Burfict as a “grinder!” back when Gruden was calling games on Monday Night Football.
2019 Oakland Raiders Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The strength of this team is going to be…their offense? The Raiders have some nice pieces here and there, but they don’t have a full compliment of pieces and Carr needs to take the next step if the Raiders are going to be competitive this year.
The weakness is clearly in the trenches. The Raiders were sacked tons of times last year and they couldn’t sack anybody. If that trend continues, they’ll have another 4-12 year.
2019 Oakland Raiders Prediction (Final Record): 4-12
The Raiders might end up going 0-8 on the road this year. Their most winnable game will be against the Jets, but that’s going to be a tough cross country game early in the morning.
As far as their other winnable games I think they can open up the season at 1-0 beating the Broncos at home. They can beat Detroit, Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Jacksonville. You can even throw in the Jets game on the road.
So, if you gave them all those wins they’d end up 6-10. That’s a very high number and that’s their absolute ceiling if everything breaks their way. That won’t happen.
All in all, I think the Raiders go 4-12 again. Right now, there’s decent enough value to bet the under on the Raiders as some of the books have the Raiders win total set at 6, which is too high.
As I mentioned above, they aren’t winning more than six so you don’t have to worry about the over hitting. If you’re getting six wins at -110 on both sides, under is the clear play.
