2019 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Roster Changes
The Los Angeles Chargers really didn’t make many changes to their roster. And why should they? The core of this team won 12 games last year and finished strong the previous year.
The only real significant free agent acquisition they made was signing Thomas Davis.
On the flip side, Tyrell Williams left to go to the Oakland Raiders.
Other than that, the Chargers added players in the draft and got rid of players who didn’t play a significant role last year.
2019 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Offense
Like a lot of veteran quarterbacks in the NFL, Phillip Rivers had one of his best seasons last year. Rivers was able to sling it around and cut out the interceptions and turnovers.
It doesn’t hurt to have a plethora of weapons to throw to. Keenan Allen, who is still one of the more underappreciated superstars in the game, is a security blanket for Rivers.
While the Chargers lost Tyrell Williams, they still have Mike Williams and a healthy Hunter Henry. Last year, Henry got hurt in training camp and that was a pretty good blow to the offense.
While Melvin Gordon might not be hurt like Henry was last year, he is currently holding out at the moment. And if he does pull a Le’Veon Bell, well, that would hurt the Chargers. Gordon is a key piece to making their offense go in the running game.
Last year’s signing of Mike Pouncey really stabilized the offensive line. They weren’t elite, but they were good enough and the Chargers are hoping for more of the same.
2019 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Defense
When Joey Bosa came back from injury last year, the Chargers played like they did the in the back half of the previous year. Bosa is an elite pass rusher and with him teamed up with Melvin Ingram it is one of the best duos in the NFL.
Derwin James was another big reason why the defense took a leap last year. James can do it all whether it be playing centerfield, playing man-to-man, or getting after the quarterback.
The Chargers will be looking to get significant help from a rookie for a third year in a row. Bosa two years ago, James last year, and this year Jerry Tillery in the trenches.
This was a top ten defense in both passing and rushing and the talent is there for the Chargers to replicate that success and maybe even be better.
Plus, as mentioned above, the Chargers signing Davis at linebacker giving them some real talent at just about every position on the defensive side of the ball.
This is a defense that just flies around and makes plays. They are very fast and cause a lot of problems. Which isn’t too surprising considering Gus Bradley is the defensive coordinator and he comes from the Pete Carroll tree of defensive coaching.
2019 Los Angeles Chargers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The strength of this team is basically their offense and defense. They can throw the ball, the can rush the passer, they can run the ball and stop the run.
I suppose you can say their weakness is the offensive line. They are thin and if Pouncey or Russell Okung get hurt then they will be hurting. The margin for error is extremely thin in the trenches.
2019 Los Angeles Chargers Prediction (Final Record): 10-6
The Los Angeles Chargers are one of the best teams in the NFL. Their roster talent is one of the best in the league and they should make it back to the playoffs and compete with the Kansas City Chiefs for the division.
However, it won’t be an easy road. Right away, the Chargers play at a disadvantage as they don’t have a real home field advantage. It’ll be apparent for some game, including week nine’s game against the Green Bay Packers as Packer fans will occupy at least 70% of the stadium.
Overall, though, their schedule is definitely manageable. They get the two best AFC South teams at their place plus Pittsburgh, and Minnesota.
Schedule wise it could have been worse and they got a pretty good roll out of it. I see the Chargers winning at least ten games. They might even duplicate their 12 win season from last year, but the oddsmakers have the Chargers set at 9.5 and I like the over.
Again, conservatively, I like the Chargers to win at least ten games and that’s good enough.
