2019 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions: Roster Changes
For a team that was on the door step of a Super Bowl appearance the Kansas City Chiefs went out and made a ton of moves. Granted, it was much needed.
The big move was getting rid of Bob Sutton and hiring Steve Spagnuolo. This was a move to get the Chiefs to the promise land and an overdue move to make. I don’t know if Spagnuolo is the answer, but it was clear that Sutton wasn’t.
In other key moves, the Chiefs got rid of Justin Houston, Dee Ford and Eric Berry; to replace them they got Frank Clark and Tyrann Mathieu.
2019 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions: Offense
Statistically, the Kansas City Chiefs had the best offense in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes broke out on the scene in his second year in record fashion.
Now, he won’t duplicate what he did last year, but Mahomes should put up numbers that are near the top of the league.
Not having Kareem Hunt did hinder their running game as they ranked 16th in the league. The Chiefs will look to roll with a running back by committee to replace Hunt’s production.
The big news this offseason was the fact that Tyreek Hill will not be suspended. He’ll be back with the Chiefs and teamed up with Sammy Watkins which will be fun to watch. Two of the most explosive wide receivers in the game catching 70 yard bombs from Mahomes.
2019 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions: Defense
Defensively, the Kansas City Chiefs have held them back for years and Andy Reid finally made a change at defensive coordinator. Steve Spagnuolo is taking over the reins and his aggressive, blitz happy defense may end up being the key for the Chiefs to get over the hump.
The Chiefs aren’t taking any chances they are going all in. Their defensive line will be good.
They made a trade for Frank Clark to get more consistent pressure on the quarterback and they signed Alex Okafor. Plus, they still have Chris Jones in the middle of things.
The back seven may end up being problematic for the Chiefs. They may have a new system which may change their fortunate, but the talent is there.
Their entire linebacking core is a question mark and all they have in the secondary is Mathieu. Perhaps, highly regarded rookie safety Juan Thornhill will help shore things up for the Chiefs.
2019 Kansas City Chiefs Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The defense is still the weakness on this team and in particular at linebacker and even the secondary. The pass rush will need to get pressure on every single snap just so opposing offenses don’t expose the back end of the secondary. Obviously, that’s not going to happen, but maybe just one or two extra times a game will be the difference.
Not only were teams able to throw the ball, but teams were able to run the ball, as well and that’s going to be huge. If teams are able to run and control the ball then that keeps the Chiefs offense on the sidelines.
The key will be just how much of a difference Spagnuolo will be able to make with the defense in his first year.
The strength is obviously the offense led by Mahomes. This was statistically the best offense last year and they should be right up there again this year.
2019 Kansas City Chiefs Prediction (Final Record): 11-5
The Kansas City Chiefs look set up to have yet another huge season. Not only do they have the talent, but the schedule sets up really nicely.
The majority of their tough games will come at home. Baltimore, Indianapolis, Houston, Green Bay, and Minnesota all come to Arrowhead.
Their tough road games will come against New England and Chicago in December. I suppose you can even throw in Jacksonville on opening day.
Not that it’s a tough game against a tough team, but Jacksonville in early September is going to be really hot.
Other than that, the Chiefs have a nice road map.
Like the Chargers, I have the Chiefs winning at least ten games. And the oddsmakers have the Chiefs set at ten wins. If you see a line at 10.5 I’d take the over on that, as well.
I’ve got the Chiefs with 11 wins with the potential to win more than that.
