Packers kicker Mason Crosby split a late 39-yard field goal to give rookie head coach Matt LaFluer and veteran defensive coordinator Mike Pettine their first win as a sideline combo.
Rodgers, who also took five sacks opposite a stingy Bears defense, presented LaFluer with the week 1 gameball and had these uplifting words for Pettine:
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a performance like that. Obviously, a lot of credit to Mike Pettine and his staff, but to those players, just incredible.
We didn’t do them a whole lot of favors with our performance on offense. I mean every time we needed something a stop, they came up with some really big plays.”
With a solid foundation intact, Green Bay satisfied expectations under the scrutiny of season-opening play vs. quality competition. Now, the Packers look to sustain that momentum heading forward.
2019 Green Bay Packers Predictions: Roster Changes
Perhaps Green Bay’s most meaningful roster change came by replacing Mike McCarthy with dynamic, young LaFleur. At just 39-years-old, the rookie signal caller has turned the Packers’ work environment from rigid to relaxed.
LaFleur on his intended culture shift and why he believes football should be enjoyed by his players and staff:
“We’re pretty fortunate to do what we do. Who doesn’t want to have fun when they go to work?” It does not need to be an uptight environment. We can certainly come in, get our work done and have a ball doing it. I just think that you get more out of people when they enjoy what they do.”
Rodgers, whose behind-the-scenes issues with McCarthy came to light after McCarthy’s exit, has embraced his new head coach and play caller. A content Rodgers, with scads of defensive upgrades, can certainly end the Pack’s two year postseason drought.
Headlining those upgrades are the aforementioned tandem of Za’Darius and Preston Smith. Each had standout years before joining the Packers’ fray this spring. Not surprisingly, these battle-tested linemen made their presence felt on week 1.
Another impact player, Safety Adrian Amos, came over from Chicago and burnt his former team Aug. 5, recording two tackles and a crucial interception of Mitch Trubisky.
Additionally, Green Bay used its 2019 first round picks on touted pass rusher Rashan Gary and safety Darnell Savage. Savage recorded three tackles and one quarterback hit in his NFL debut.
2019 Green Bay Packers Predictions: Offense
Built to perform around Super Bowl champion Rodgers, the offensive line must protect the veteran passer from unnecessary damage. Last season Rodgers absorbed a career-high 49 sacks and spent most of his year hobbled. After taking five sacks during week one, it’s clear more work needs to go into securing Rodgers’ pocket if the offense is to thrive.
With pocket time, wideouts Davante Adams, Jimmy Graham and Marques Valdes-Scantling can harrass opposing secondaries. Though, under constant pressure during week 1, Rodgers didn’t maximize this trio: only Graham found the end zone. Valdes-Scantling’s 53 yards recieving led Green Bay’s subpar offensive offering.
Lacking space, the Packers tallied 47 Ground yards vs. Chicago as leading rusher Aaron Jones added 37 yards on 13 carries.
2019 Green Bay Packers Predictions: Defense
Completely contrasted with a struggling offense, Green Bay’s defense shined while recording 11 quarterback hits and five sacks in week 1. The off-season plan to upgrade the secondary and pass rush paid dividends to open a new season.
Expect solid output from this group helmed by Pettine.
2019 Green Bay Packers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
As mentioned throughout, the Pack’s defense and coaching is its strength. Bolstered by athletic, rugged linebackers and skilled secondary, Green Bay will have a chance in most games this year.
Conversely, an incoherent offensive line routinely stifles Hall of Famer Rodgers and his fleet recieving corps.
2019 Green Bay Packers Predictions (Final Record): 9-7
Though, a weaker schedule, and weaker defenses will help Rodgers overcome his protection issues. And if the offensive line makes even slight improvements, this talented, well-coached Green Bay team could surpass Vegas’ win totals.
