2017 New England Patriots Predictions: Roster Changes
The Patriots saw some important pieces move out, as is a common issue among defending Super Bowl champions, but they were able to, one-by-one, replace each of those lost faces.
LeGarrette Blount had one of his best pro seasons a year ago, but the younger Mike Gillislee is a terrific edition.
Martellus Bennett was able to shine with Rob Gronkowski sidelined for much of the stretch run, but Dwayne Allen is capable of contributing in many of the same ways, and grades out as an elite run-blocker.

Logan Ryan has been a key piece at cornerback, but Stephon Gilmore should be an immediate upgrade, for whom the team paid top dollar. Chris Long rejuvenated his career under Bill Belichick’s tutelage, and Kony Ealy, acquired via trade with the Carolina Panthers, should shine as well.
Then there’s the big-ticket acquisition of wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the New Orleans Saints, giving Tom Brady the best vertical receiving threat he’s had in the fold since Randy Moss.
2017 New England Patriots Predictions: Offense
The Patriots’ offense continues to run through Tom Brady. And he has a depth of receiving talent as good as he’s had in years. It’ll be interesting to see how active Cooks will be in his first year in Belichick’s system.
We’ve seen veterans need a year or two to adjust, but it seems likely that after they sent a first-round pick to New Orleans to acquire Cooks’ services, there’ll be more than a few plays in the playbooks designed to get the ball in his hands in space.

There’s a glut of running backs on the roster, with James White really popping off last season, and the return of a healthy Dion Lewis, coupled with new additions Gillislee and Rex Burkhead. Expect all of those guys to get their touches, many of which will come in the passing game.
2017 New England Patriots Predictions: Defense
Gilmore was the prize acquisition of the offseason.
The former Buffalo Bills cornerback was expected to command top dollar on the open market, and he was able to get it from an unlikely source in the Patriots, who normally expect players to come to New England at a discount in exchange for the increased likelihood of playing for a contender. Resigning Dont’a Hightower was key.
He does a lot for this unit.
2017 New England Patriots Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The passing game is going to be explosive this season. Brady will have weapons all over the field, and the coaching staff will surely draw up a lot of different ways to exploit and frustrate opposing defenses.

It’s tough to point out weaknesses on this squad. They may run into some issues in the secondary if they do go ahead and trade Malcolm Butler. And the offensive line has been shaky at times in recent years.
2017 New England Patriots Prediction (Final Record): 13-3
As if last year’s Super Bowl winning Patriots weren’t good enough, the team has only gotten better in the offseason – including the adding the trio of Cooks, Ealy, and Allen, who are all 27 years old or younger.
Couple that with an uncharacteristically lucrative signing of a key player in Gilmore, replacing a departing starter at the position, and it’s tough to imagine many teams giving the Patriots too great a test this season.
This team is simply a well-oiled machine, and it will be years to come before any team is able to dethrone them as the model franchise. Consider backing the Patriots for bets on the AFC East, AFC, and Super Bowl LII.
