On Wednesday, January 6th, 2021, the Oklahoma City Thunder travel to play the New Orleans Pelicans in their second meeting this season. In the first match, the Pelicans served up the worst loss to this point versus OKC with a score of 113-80.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Thunder sweeping the series. OKC holds the all-time record between the squads with 36 victories in the team’s 62 meetings.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder are right on track to do precisely what they want this season which is to lose as many games as possible in order to garner the top pick in a draft class loaded with talent.
The young core is developing and they’ve netted two victories but for one of the first times this season their match versus the Heat offered hints Thunder head coach, Mark Daigneault won’t push his team to collect wins.
Case in point, the trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Darius Bazley and Luguentz Dort (all 22 and under) played 28, 26 and 24 minutes respectively and sat along with starting vets George Hill and Al Horford the final 17 minutes of the match.
Consequently, that same trio led the Thunder with 18, 16 and 12 points respectively as the only double-figure scorers.
The Heat held the Thunder to an anemic 36.7% from the field and 27.1% from the perimeter.
Rookie Aleksej Pokusevski suffered a concussion missing the game Monday and is questionable for Wednesday. Darius Miller (Achilles) Ty Jerome (ankle) and Trevor Ariza (personal) are all out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
While the Pelicans are off to a solid start their match versus the Indiana Pacers on Monday demonstrated they still have work to do.
The Pacers erased a six point deficit in the final 20 seconds of regulation to force overtime where they went on to defeat New Orleans on their home court.
The Pelicans held a double-digit lead with 3:46 remaining but couldn’t summon the defense required to stave off the charging Pacers.
Brandon Ingram led the way with 31 points while two starters delivered double-doubles. Eric Bledsoe achieved the mark for the second consecutive game with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Zion Williamson notched his own featuring 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Lonzo Ball pitched in 18 points while Steven Adams scored 10 points as all five starters delivered double-digit contributions.
The Pacers bench outscored the Pelicans 33 to 20 and New Orleans continues to struggle with ball control serving up 19 turnovers. In addition, the Pelicans allowed Indiana to shoot 42.2 percent from the perimeter on 19 of 45.
Sindarius Thornwell missed the last two games to the league’s health and safety protocols. He is questionable for Wednesday. Wenyen Gabriel (knee) and Will Magnay (personal) are both out indefinitely.
