Tuesday, January 31st the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers are playing for the second of four scheduled meetings this season. The Heat will host a baseball set between the teams on March 8th and 10th. Cleveland won the initial meeting on November 20th (113-87).
Both teams last played on Sunday with Miami losing in a 117-122 shocker to the Hornets while the Cavaliers yet again got to face a squad electing to rest their stars (plus five others) as they easily ran away with the 122-99 win versus the Clippers.
Last season the teams played three times with the Cavaliers winning two of three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 74 of their 123 matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Monday evening, January 30th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Tuesday, January 31st.
Miami Heat
Offense has been a struggle for the Heat this entire season and that’s a bit of a surprise given the roster barely changed. The most dramatic change isn’t their lack of scoring but why it’s fallen off a cliff.
The reason can be summed up in two words – – perimeter shooting!
In 2021-22 the Heat possessed the top-ranked perimeter efficiency (37.9%) and made the sixth most triples (13.6) per game.
And the regression is across the roster with a stark contrast between last season and this season. Tyler Herro (37%), Caleb Martin (37%), and Haywood Highsmith (36.3%) are the only Heat players shooting better above 34 percent.
Last season 10 players shot above that mark, and more impressively five shot between 39.9% and 41.5% with another three shooting between 36.8% and 37.7%, and of that octet, seven are still on the team.
Stats
Offensively, the Heat scores 108.6 points per game ranking 30th while shooting 45.3% from the field and 33.4% from the perimeter with both efficiency categories ranking 27th.
Defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 108.4 points per game ranking second overall. Miami opponents shoot 47.5% from the field and 36.8% from the perimeter ranking 20th and 26th respectively.
Duncan Robinson (finger), Nikola Jovic (back), and Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
I might have to start calling the Cavaliers the gifted team and not for the reason most believe. I’ve been on this tangent for a while now but it’s starting to get out of hand.
Yet again, they were the recipient of an elite team (Clippers) resting their best players against them while their Eastern counterparts face the full complement of starters.
It was the ninth time this season the Cavs beat a team with a winning record who was missing a core player(s) – – seven without the best player (the second-best player was out in the other two), and in all but one at least two starters were out but frequently that number ballooned to three or four out.
Considering they’re 14-14 versus winning teams and only faced five relatively intact regular starting lineups it should raise some red flags.
Aside: you have to wonder if Cavs counterparts are going to get annoyed by how frequently they’re the team opponents elect to rest their best against but in turn play their regular starting lineup when facing them.
Stats
Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.5 points per game ranking 26th while shooting 48.4% from the field and 36.7% on the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.
Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 106.9 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 46.7% from the field and 37.0% from deep ranking ninth and 27th.
Kevin Love (back) is questionable for Tuesday. Dylan Windler (ankle) is out indefinitely.

Free Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Some games have more importance than others, especially when teams are adjacent in the standings which is where the fifth and sixth-place Cavaliers and Heat are.
Adding another level of drama was the Sunday matches with Miami’s loss to Charlotte made more insulting by the fact the Cavs played the G League Clippers.
Cleveland routed Miami in the first meeting which was one of those nine games I outlined (both Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro were out) so they’ll be looking to even the series, shave the 2.0 game lead and deliver a message about what it means to face a healthy Heat lineup.
