The NBA Skills Challenge got the serious jolt of life it needed when the league introduced big men to the competition. This year is no exception to the relatively new rule, with both forwards and centers set to take center stage against some of the league’s top floor generals on All-Star Saturday night.
Here is a look at the top 5 players in this contest as far as oddsmakers are concerned, as well as the full odds entering the event.
De’Aaron Fox 2019 NBA Skills Challenge Odds +250
De’Aaron Fox is having the breakout season fans in Sacramento were hoping for last year during his rookie campaign. But the phrase “better late than never” comes to mind, and quite frankly, it’s not even that drastic considering the kid is still just 21 years old.

In this competition, Fox will have one serious advantage over everyone else: speed. This point guard is fast.
Where he could get hung up is if his passes aren’t on target and then he turns his speed and quickness into rushed play.
Fox is a good No. 1 here, but he’s also a bit risky if you’re looking at just his speed.
Luka Doncic 2019 NBA Skills Challenge Odds +325
The 2018-19 NBA season has been The Year Of Lukamania. Luka Doncic is owning just about every part of his rookie campaign and it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking for the consensus (and potentially unanimous) Rookie of the Year to take an All-Star Weekend contest.
As good as he’s been, chances are another young stud takes over the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night as a way of getting him some spotlight—possibly for the first time.
With that in mind, Luka becomes an even better choice if the Skills Challenge becomes his last opportunity for some All-Star Weekend hardware.

Trae Young 2019 NBA Skills Challenge Odds +375
Trae Young wants to beat Luka Doncic. He’s not going to do it in the Rookie of the Year race, so at +375, he’s a great choice to upset both Luka and Fox ahead of him.
Mike Conley 2019 NBA Skills Challenge Odds +550
If you’re looking for another underdog with plenty of motivation to win, it might be Mike Conley.

When Conley’s career is all said and done and we have a chance to reflect on his accomplishments, we may end up viewing this Memphis Grizzlies point guard as the greatest floor general to never make an All-Star Game. Winning this skills competition will not make up for years of egregious omissions, but it will get him a piece of hardware to at least soften the blow when he—just like us—takes a step back and evaluates his career when he finally hangs up the sneakers.
Nikola Jokic/Jayson Tatum 2019 NBA Skills Challenge Odds +600
These two bigs are the future of the NBA. No, they’re not going to be the two “best” players any time soon (or ever, most likely), but they are both going to be perennial All-Stars before too long. Jokic, in particular, may end up going down as the best passing big man of all time when he calls it a career.
If you’re trying to decide between the two, I like Tatum—despite Jokic’s ridiculous abilities for a big man. Tatum will likely play the contest a bit smoother and will be a bit quicker off the block. Those things may not sound too important, but they’re lowkey crucial when fractions of seconds can be the difference between winning and losing on Saturday night.
