NASCAR Handicapping
For the first time on over 65 years we will see a points-scoring race on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule outside of the United States as Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will host the inaugural edition of the Viva Mexico 250. Few drivers have experience on this track, which should make for a wide open race.
This will be the first points-scoring race held outside the United States since 1958. This race will help expand the fandom of NASCAR in Mexico, building on the circuit’s growing popularity there. This race will be hosted on the same track that has hosted a Formula 1 race for the past decade.
This race will cover just under 250 miles across a total of 100 laps. We’ve seen this track previously host races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, so we have seen some of the drivers in this week’s field compete here before which gives us some insight into how they may fare this week.
This race is the second to last race on the schedule before the In-Season Challenge. William Byron continues to sit atop the drivers’ standings, even after a 28th place finish at the Firekeepers Casino 400. Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin moved closer to him. Hamlin’s third place result was his second consecutive podium finish.
NASCAR 2025 Viva Mexico 250 Race Odds: Shane van Gisbergen +480
Shane van Gisbergen is a name we always see rocket up the odds board when the circuit moves to road courses, and this week is no different despite van Gisbergen’s struggles as a full-time driver. He’s left a lot on the track as an intermediate driver, but is coming off a solid P18 showing at Michigan.
Even still, his current standing of P33 leaves a lot to be desired. Van Gisbergen has only one top 10 finish on the season, so taking advantage of a road course like this one will be of great importance to him to justify his position.
NASCAR 2025 Viva Mexico 250 Race Odds: Christopher Bell +700
Bell has grown into being one of the most steady drivers in the sport, so it was disappointing to see him break a top 10 streak with a P16 at Michigan, though that is a track he’s historically struggled at so we can let him off the hook.
The No. 20 Toyota should be looking to bounce back and add to his current P4 in the overall point standings, sitting only 96 points behind the lead with three wins on the season.
NASCAR Odds: Tyler Reddick +800
It’s been a frustrating season for Reddick, who despite sitting P6 in the overall point standings, is still without a win. He has five top 10 finishes and three top fives, so he is running well. You’d have to think a trip to victory lane is in the cards for Reddick in the near future.
NASCAR Odds: Chase Elliott +1100
Elliott is another driver who’s sitting pretty in the overall standings despite not having a win. The Henrick Motorsports driver was looking good in Michigan, leading the pack before the final stage came around and he fell back to a P15. He’s still P5 in the overall point standings, and has led 95 laps in 2025.
NASCAR Odds: Kyle Busch +1400
Add Busch to the list of drivers yearning for a win this year. Busch is hanging around the playoff cut-line at P15 in the overall standings, so a win would do a world of good for his position. He’ll be a fan favorite in Mexico and that extra motivation could be what pushes him into victory lane.
