NASCAR Handicapping
NASCAR’s In-Season Challenge rolls into Wine Country this weekend with the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
As expected, Shane van Gisbergen dominated last week’s Grant Park 165 on the Chicago Street Course — notching his second win of the season. His other victory came at the Mexico City street course, meaning both of his wins have come on non-traditional tracks.
Now, he’s back atop the odds board heading into the only true road course of the six-race in-season challenge slate. Not surprisingly, oddsmakers are backing SVG to go back-to-back in another favorable setting.
Meanwhile, William Byron’s recent skid continued. He’s now posted back-to-back rough outings, and his once-comfortable lead in the standings has shrunk to just 13 points. Right behind him, Chase Elliott is closing fast, with Kyle Larson just six points further back in third.
There’s a bit of a gap before you get to fourth and fifth, currently held by Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick. However, both drivers helped their cause with top-five finishes last week.
All eyes will be on Larson this weekend. He’s been elite at Sonoma, winning two of the last four runnings — including last year’s race. That said, he hasn’t been himself lately, finishing outside the top 10 in three of his last four races. If he’s going to turn things around, this is the place to do it.
NASCAR 2025 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Race Odds: Shane van Gisbergen +140
Van Gisbergen really cemented his affinity for this track type with an historic weekend in Chicago. He started from the pole and won both the Xfinity Series race, and the Cup Series race. The Cup Series win was his second of the season, with the other coming in Mexico City.
He didn’t participate in the Cup Series race at Sonoma last year, but he did win the Xfinity Series race here. That puts him in tremendous position for win no. 3 on the season, and the oddsmakers agree.
NASCAR 2025 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Race Odds: Kyle Larson +600
Kyle Larson’s been stuck in a bit of a slump lately, but he showed signs of life with a respectable P13 finish in Chicago.
Now, he heads to Sonoma — a track that’s been incredibly kind to him over the years. Larson has dominated here in the past, racking up two wins and five poles at this road course. Not to mention, he rolls in as the defending race winner.
That said, the road to victory won’t be easy this time around. With Shane van Gisbergen in the field, Larson faces one of his toughest road course challengers yet.
NASCAR 2025 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Race Odds: Chase Elliott +1000
Chase Elliott had a letdown in Chicago, finishing P16 in a race where expectations were much higher.
However, Sonoma offers a fresh opportunity — and it’s a track where he’s quietly been very consistent. While Elliott has yet to grab a win here, he’s posted six top-10 finishes in eight career starts. That kind of track record puts him firmly in the mix this weekend.
All things considered, this is a prime chance for Elliott to finally check Sonoma off his list and notch that elusive first win at the road course.
NASCAR Odds: Michael McDowell +1000
Much like SVG, Michael McDowell tends to climb the odds board when it comes to road course tracks — and this week is no different.
He showed real speed in Chicago, qualifying second and winning Stage 1 before mechanical issues ruined what could’ve been a huge day. As a result, he faded to a disappointing P32 finish, but the pace was there.
Looking back, McDowell’s been strong at Sonoma too. He finished second to Kyle Larson last year and continues to thrive on these layouts. If his equipment holds up, he’s got legit top-10 upside — and maybe more.
NASCAR Odds: Alex Bowman +3700
If you scan a little further down the odds board, you’ll find Alex Bowman — and he might be worth a closer look.
In what’s shaping up to be a wide-open race, Bowman brings strong value as a driver capable of hanging around and making noise late. In fact, he’s shown a steady hand all season, and it looks like he’s peaking at just the right time.
He’s logged top-five finishes in two of his last four starts. Moreover, Bowman has a solid history at this track, notching top-15 results in each of the past two years. That kind of consistency makes him a sneaky contender if things break his way.
