NASCAR Handicapping
The NASCAR Cup Series continues this weekend in Georgia at the recently rebranded EchoPark Speedway – formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway – for the second race on this track of 2025. This race will mark the start of the in-season tournament.
Despite sitting out the Viva Mexico 250 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after the birth of his third child, Denny Hamlin is inserted as the No. 1 seed in NASCAR’s first edition of the in-season tournament. He claimed the spot thanks to his win at Michigan International Speedway, along with his runner-up finish last weekend at Pocono Raceway.
Chase Briscoe was the winner of last weekend’s race at Pocono Raceway, which was enough to tie him with Hamlin over the three-race seeding period, but Hamlin’s tiebreaker was his second-place finish at Pocono which bested Briscoe’s second-best finish of seventh over the three races.
The in-season tournament will see 32 drivers compete in a head-to-head format in groups of two across a five-week stretch, with the highest finishing driver in each pairing advancing to the next round of the tournament. The pairings will be re-seeded each week with the highest seed remaining competing against the lowest seed remaining.
This weekend’s race will knock the field of 32 down to 16 drivers, with those 16 drivers re-seeded and set to compete in next weekend’s Chicago Street Course, with eight drivers advancing to the next round at Sonoma Raceway, where four drivers will emerge to compete at Dover Motor Speedway, followed by the final two drivers locking horns in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the in-season tournament’s $1 million prize.
For this week, we’ll aim to pick a winner at EchoPark Speedway, which is a 1.54-mile superspeedway-style drafting track. Thanks to the draft, the drivers will be even closer than normal throughout the entire field, making a big wreck within the pack even more likely than a typical NASCAR event.
NASCAR 2025 Quaker State 400 Race Odds: Ryan Blaney +750
Blaney is one of the names we’re used to seeing jump to the top of the odds board at superspeedways, and this week is no different as oddsmakers have tabbed him as the driver to beat. He has the best average finish, the best Driver Rating, and the best Speed Ranking at Atlanta in the Next Gen era.
NASCAR 2025 Quaker State 400 Race Odds: Joey Logano +850
Another driver we look to as a top-tier superspeedway race is Logano, who excels at the draft. He’s averaged the most laps led at Atlanta, where he has the second best Driver Rating behind only Blaney. In the spring race here, he finished 10th in Stage 1, third in Stage 2, and led the most laps (83) on the day. He ran out of steam late which saw him fall back and settle for a 12th place finish, so he’ll be motivated to better that this weekend.
NASCAR Odds: William Byron +1600
Byron is another driver who’s enjoyed plenty of success at Atlanta. After winning the Daytona 500 earlier this year to solidify his spot as one of the best superspeedway racers in the field, Byron settled for an asterisk-marked 27th place finish at the spring race in Atlanta after finishing third in Stage 1 and fourth in Stage 2. He’s won here twice before.
NASCAR Odds: Kyle Larson +1600
Larson always seems to be at his best when the chips are down, and the championship challenger will look to make his mark by adding a fourth win to his resume for the season.
NASCAR Odds: Chase Briscoe +3000
Can Briscoe make it two in a row? He’s had great speed this year and may have finally figured out the JGR Toyotas. He’ll be a driver to watch the rest of the way.
