NASCAR Handicapping
The streets of Chicago will serve as the backdrop for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race, as the Grant Park 165 takes place on Sunday. Notably, this event also marks the second of five races in the In-Season Challenge, which kicked off with the Quaker State 400 last Sunday.
As one of the newest additions to the NASCAR calendar, this race debuted in 2023. It spans 165 miles over 75 laps, with drivers tackling stage lengths of 20 and 25 laps before a final stage of 30 laps.
Alex Bowman captured the win here in 2024, while Shane van Gisbergen took the inaugural victory in 2023.
Chase Elliott was the winning driver in last week’s race as he emerged from the field in the Quaker State 400. That moved Elliott within striking distance of William Byron for the top spot in the driver standings thanks to his third top-five finish in a row.
NASCAR 2025 Grant Park 165 Race Odds: Shane van Gisbergen +225
Street circuits are a completely different animal than the traditional circuits on the NASCAR schedule. They require a different skillset, and van Gisbergen has proven he possesses that skillset, and he’ll look to showcase that this weekend as he looks to record another victory here after winning the race on the streets of Chicago in 2023 in the inaugural edition of this race. The victory snapped a 44-race winless skid for Elliott.
Van Gisbergen made his mark on the playoff race with his win at Mexico City last month. Now he can put his road-course skills on full display once again in Chicago in his quest for a second title in the Windy City.
NASCAR 2025 Grant Park 165 Race Odds: Christopher Bell +800
Bell’s won on road courses three times before, and notably, he was in the hunt for wins at each of the first two Chicago races. His skillset clearly lends itself well to this track type, and furthermore, he already has a road course win this year at COTA and finished second at Mexico.
If SVG is locked in as the best road racer in the circuit, then Bell is a close second.
NASCAR Odds: Chase Elliott +1200
Elliott’s won on road courses seven times before, and now that he’s finally broken his winless drought, he’s firmly back on the radar as a contender in these races. Admittedly, he hasn’t won in the Next Gen at road courses yet, but we’ve still seen him competing for a spot in victory lane in several events. In fact, he certainly ran well enough to win one or two of them with a little better luck.
This year, he has an average finish of 3.5 at road courses and hasn’t finished outside the top four.
NASCAR Odds: Alex Bowman +1800
Bowman won this race in 2024 and currently sits at No. 12 in the drivers’ standings. However, he’s yet to qualify for the playoffs, so he’ll be pushing hard for a strong result here. He showed solid form in the race at Atlanta, but ultimately finished P3.
Simply put, a win here would put a definitive stamp on his season.
NASCAR Odds: Chris Buescher +1800
Buescher has fared well in road races, and moreover, he enters this week’s in strong form. He was in the mix in Atlanta and looked like he’d be in the conversation to win, but ultimately had to settle for a ninth-place result.
Still, that’s a solid way to build momentum heading into a stretch of road races that should, in turn, see him higher on the odds board than usual.
