NASCAR Handicapping
Only two spots in the NASCAR Championship race remain up for grabs at Martinsville this weekend as the remaining six drivers without their ticket punched will compete at this weekend’s Xfinity 500. Tyler Reddick won in a thriller last Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway when he passed 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney on the last lap.
Reddick joins Joey Logano as the two drivers who have secured their spots in the championship race at Phoenix next week. At Martinsville this weekend, if one of those six drivers can do what Logano and Reddick have done the last two weeks then they too will be through to Phoenix.
NASCAR 2024 Xfinity 500 Race Odds: Kyle Larson +450
Larson pushed hard for the win at Homestead, but he wasn’t part of the finish after navigating back to the front by the end of the race. He’s now in a spot we’re not used to seeing him, entering this elimination race below the bubble.
He hasn’t been particularly impressive at Martinsville, he’s been a lot better since joining Hendrick Motorsports and has two runner-up finishes and a win in the last four races. He’ll surely find a way to get himself through to the final four.
NASCAR 2024 Xfinity 500 Race Odds: Denny Hamlin +500
Hamlin’s been on the upswing of late, and he can now right the ship with a win and a spot in the final four after what’s been a very inconsistent summer and start to the playoffs. If he can bring it all together this weekend at Martinsville, his 18-point deficit will be forgotten.
NASCAR Odds: William Byron +700
Byron never really stood out at Miami but he did come away with 39 points to keep within site of the elimination line entering this weekend. He’s won two of the past three spring Martinsville races so he knows how to win here and will be pushing to do so again to advance to the final four.
At least one Hendrick driver will be eliminated Sunday, and potentially two, so a win for Byron would make for a much softer landing for the Hendrick team.
NASCAR Odds: Chase Elliott +900
Elliott is one of the drivers who’ll be pushing for a victory to punch his ticket to the Championship 4, so it’ll be all-or-nothing for Elliott at Martinsville this weekend. He’s sitting 43 points below the cut line for Phoenix. He’s coming off a good race at Homestead, but he’s still going to need a win at Martinsville.
And he has a good resume here, which bodes well for his chances. He won this race four years ago when he led 236 laps. A year ago he led 83 laps in this race, and he led 64 laps here in the spring en route to finishing third.
NASCAR Odds: Christopher Bell +1200
Bell has been a model of consistently with an average finish of 5.0 over the past 10 races dating back to the end of the regular season. He’s been as good as any driver in the 2024 playoffs, yet he’s in a position where he could miss out on a spot in the Championship 4 after qualifying each of the past two years.
He won this very race back in 2022 to punch his ticket through to his first Championship 4, but this is a track he hasn’t otherwise been great at with that result as just one of his three top 10 finishes in nine Martinsville starts where his average finish is 16.2. That win was also one of just two races he’s led laps at Martinsville Speedway.
