NASCAR Handicapping
The final race of the 2024 NASCAR regular season gets underway this weekend at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.
This race will give drivers their final opportunity to lock up a coveted spot in the playoffs. Fitting that this is one of the most prestigious races on the calendar, with a history dating back to 1950.
Harrison Burton was the surprise winner of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 last weekend, helping improve his chances of earning a playoff berth.
The top five drivers in the standings all failed to secure a spot in the top 20 of that race, with Tyler Reddick moving back to the top of the overall standings, with Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott right behind him.

NASCAR 2024 Cook Out Southern 500 Race Odds: Tyler Reddick +550
Reddick crashing out at Daytona was disappointing, but he’s the points leader heading into this final race of the regular season, and he has to be feeling a certain way about not having the number of wins many of the other top drivers do.
Winning at Darlington feels like something he’s going to do sooner or later after leading 174 laps here in the spring, so solidifying his spot atop the regular season standings with a victory would surely do the trick.
NASCAR 2024 Cook Out Southern 500 Race Odds: Denny Hamlin +550
That white-hot midseason run of Hamlin’s feels like a distant memory, but he remains a favorite of the oddsmakers as a driver who could win in any given week. He has four top-fives on this track since 2021, and that includes a victory along with 386 laps led.
The point penalty will cost him a chance at the regular season title, though a P38 at Daytona didn’t help on that front either. Getting things back on track leading into the playoffs has to be a priority.
Hamlin’s as good as they come on this track and he could sure use the boost.
NASCAR Odds: Martin Truex Jr. +1100
Continuing with the trend of drivers who need a good showing here to turn their momentum around, Truex comes to South Carolina with six finishes of 24th or worse in his last seven races. Darlington’s a track that could help him right that ship as he’s a perennial contender here, even if the final results don’t show it.
A win here to clinch a playoff spot would go a long way in getting Truex back toward the highs he’s ridden at times this season.

NASCAR Odds: Ryan Blaney +1600
After his win at Poco, the defending champion has just one top 10 to show for the four races that followed, and he’s been on a progressive decline with each result worse than the last. He’ll need to overcome his track record at Darlington to stop the bleeding.
His average finish here is 18.5, so it could be a disastrous close out to the season for No. 12, but he does have a pair of top 10s in the last three races here, so perhaps this track could help him spurn a turnaround.
NASCAR Odds: Kyle Busch +1600
It doesn’t feel like it, but Busch could be on the outside looking in once the playoff spots for 2024 are handed out. He must win at Darlington to remain in the hunt for this year’s title, and to extend a postseason streak that dates back to 2012.
He’s won here before, but that was way back in 2008. He has only one top 10 here in the last six races, but needing that win to remain in the hunt for title No. 3 could be just what he needs to find that extra gear.
