Nationals vs. Dodgers Gameday
The Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers close their weekend series Sunday night with the two clubs moving in opposite directions. Washington enters at 67-77 after dropping three straight games, while Los Angeles is 85-57 and has won three in a row. The game will be played at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers are 43-28 this season.
Los Angeles has taken the first two games of this series, including Saturday’s 6-5 comeback win.
Washington held a 4-2 lead Saturday before Tommy Edman’s three-run homer put Los Angeles in front in the seventh inning. The Nationals scored again in the ninth and put the tying run on third base before falling short. That followed a 5-3 loss in Friday’s series opener.
The Dodgers have continued winning despite playing without Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani missed his third consecutive start Saturday while dealing with issues involving his neck, right biceps and left knee. His availability for Sunday’s finale remains an important storyline for a Los Angeles lineup trying to complete the sweep.
Washington will turn to left-hander Andrew Alvarez, while Los Angeles has Justin Wrobleski lined up to work in a pitching plan that could involve multiple arms. The Nationals need a win to avoid leaving Los Angeles empty-handed after a competitive first two games.

Washington Nationals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Odds & Last 5
The Dodgers are heavy home favorites in Sunday’s series finale. Los Angeles is available around -212 on the moneyline, while Washington is around +170. The total is set at 8.5 runs, giving bettors a relatively modest number for the Sunday night matchup.
Los Angeles has won three straight games overall.
The Dodgers opened this series with a 5-3 victory behind six scoreless innings from Blake Snell. They followed that by rallying from a two-run deficit Saturday to beat Washington 6-5. Tommy Edman’s three-run homer provided the biggest swing in that comeback.
Washington has dropped three consecutive games after also losing 9-0 to Atlanta before traveling west.
The Nationals have been more competitive at Dodger Stadium than the results suggest. They scored three times in the ninth inning Friday and brought the tying run to third in the ninth Saturday. Los Angeles has still found a way to close out both games.
Dodgers Stats
Los Angeles enters Sunday with an 85-57 record and remains in control of the NL West. The Dodgers have scored 698 runs while allowing 548, giving them one of the strongest run differentials in the National League. Their 43-28 home record has also helped keep them atop the division.
The lineup remains dangerous even with Ohtani’s status uncertain.
Ohtani has 30 home runs and 80 RBIs while batting .279 this season. His recent physical issues have kept him out of three straight starting lineups, forcing Los Angeles to shuffle the top of the order. Tommy Edman has responded by providing an important spark.
The pitching staff has also received some reinforcements entering September.
Justin Wrobleski recently returned from the injured list after dealing with left forearm inflammation. The All-Star left-hander is 11-5 with a 3.65 ERA, 104 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP across 128.1 innings. Los Angeles also activated Bobby Miller, giving the club another arm available behind Wrobleski.

Nationals Stats
Washington enters the series finale at 67-77 after dropping the first two games in Los Angeles. The Nationals have received solid production from several young hitters, with James Wood and CJ Abrams providing much of the power. Wood leads the club with 30 home runs.
Abrams has also put together another productive season.
The shortstop is batting .265 with 29 home runs, 94 RBIs and 28 stolen bases through 135 games. Keibert Ruiz has supplied additional production from behind the plate, batting .286 with nine home runs. Washington’s lineup has enough young talent to make opposing pitchers work.
The pitching staff has been less consistent overall, although Sunday’s starter has performed better than his record suggests.
Andrew Alvarez enters at 2-6 with a 3.47 ERA across 21 appearances, including 13 starts. He has struck out 86 hitters over 90.2 innings while posting a 1.31 WHIP. Alvarez has also allowed only five home runs all season, giving Washington a left-hander who has generally kept the ball in the park.

Nationals vs. Dodgers Pitching Matchup
Andrew Alvarez gets the assignment for Washington with better numbers than his 2-6 record might suggest. The left-hander owns a 3.47 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 90.2 innings. He has struck out 86 while allowing only 78 hits and five home runs.
Alvarez has also pitched well recently.
He tossed six scoreless innings against Miami in his most recent appearance, allowing only two hits while striking out six. Across his last three outings, Alvarez has surrendered four earned runs in 15.2 innings. His ability to keep Los Angeles in the ballpark could be important Sunday.
Justin Wrobleski is scheduled to work for Los Angeles after recently returning from the injured list. The left-hander is 11-5 with a 3.65 ERA and has struck out 104 over 128.1 innings. His 1.11 WHIP reflects how effectively he has limited traffic this season.
The Dodgers may not ask Wrobleski to handle the entire traditional starter workload.
Los Angeles has multiple pitchers available for extended work, with Bobby Miller among the options behind him. That gives Dave Roberts flexibility as the Dodgers manage their staff heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
Washington Nationals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers bottom line: Washington sends an in-form Andrew Alvarez to the mound, while Los Angeles looks to complete the sweep with a flexible pitching plan.
Washington Nationals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Betting Trends

Nationals Dodgers Free Pick: Under 8.5
Here is my Nationals Dodgers free pick:
I’m sticking with the Under 8.5, and Andrew Alvarez’s recent form is a big reason why. Washington’s left-hander has been limiting damage, and that matters against a Dodgers lineup that could again be without Shohei Ohtani.
LA also has enough pitching flexibility to make life difficult on Washington. Justin Wrobleski is back in the mix, and the Dodgers have multiple arms available behind him if they decide to spread the workload around.
That setup works for me because Washington hasn’t exactly been rolling offensively. The Nationals were shut out by Atlanta before this series and scored three runs Friday. They did reach five Saturday, but three of those runs came during a late push after Los Angeles had taken control.
I see more ways for the pitching to control this game than either lineup to break it open.
Alvarez also comes in with some momentum after six scoreless innings against Miami. More importantly, he has surrendered only four earned runs across his last three outings, giving Washington a chance to hang around without needing a big offensive night.
LA has won three straight, but this number still requires nine runs to beat us. I’ll trust the pitching setup and play the Under 8.5.
