Rays vs. Guardians Gameday
The Tampa Bay Rays visit the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, October 16, 2026, for ALCS Game 4 at Progressive Field. Cleveland leads the series 2-1 after Thursday’s victory. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM ET on TBS and HBO Max, subject to changes.
Kevin Cash’s Rays finished 98-64 as the AL’s top seed. Tampa Bay needs a road victory to keep Cleveland from moving within one win of the World Series.
The Rays have dropped two of three in this series.
Cleveland has the series lead, but Tampa Bay has the starting pitching to make Game 4 a serious fight.
Stephen Vogt’s Guardians finished 85-77 before surviving a five-game ALDS against the White Sox. Strong pitching and timely hitting have carried Cleveland into the ALCS lead.
Rain threatens another schedule adjustment after Thursday’s game was moved earlier. A postponement could alter both clubs’ pitching plans. The winner takes an important step toward controlling the series.

Guardians Stats
Cleveland finished with a .239 batting average, .316 OBP and .380 slugging percentage. The Guardians hit 162 home runs and scored 678 runs, relying more on situational hitting than power.
The pitching staff posted a 3.77 ERA and 1,530 strikeouts, third-most in MLB. Opponents batted just .237.
Pitching has been Cleveland’s biggest postseason advantage.
Cleveland doesn’t need a big offensive night when its pitching staff keeps handing the lineup manageable assignments.
José Ramírez anchors Cleveland’s offense with power, speed and aggressive baserunning. Brayan Rocchio played 153 games and drove in 73 runs.
Chase DeLauter has contributed during the postseason. Cleveland also has the speed and contact hitters to manufacture runs without homers.
Cade Smith handles important late innings, supported by Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski. Their depth gives Vogt matchup flexibility.
Workload remains important after Cleveland used four relievers Thursday.
Rays Stats
Tampa Bay finished batting .258 with a .326 OBP and .402 slugging percentage. The Rays scored 736 runs and hit 169 homers, relying more on baserunners than overwhelming power. The pitching staff posted a 3.72 ERA and held opponents to .228. Tampa Bay also surrendered 201 home runs.
Junior Caminero led the offense with 42 homers, 101 RBIs and a .276 average.
Yandy Díaz hit .293 with 22 homers, while Jonathan Aranda batted .274 with 22. Both provide important support around Caminero.
Cash has experienced relief options available. Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker can handle important late innings.
Tampa Bay has struggled to sustain rallies in this series, particularly with runners in scoring position. Cleveland has consistently limited productive contact. The Rays need better situational hitting to regain control.
Rays vs. Guardians Pitching Matchup
Nick Martinez is expected to start Game 4 for Tampa Bay, weather permitting. The right-hander finished 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA, 109 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP. He worked 180 innings across 31 starts.
Martinez delivered 13 scoreless innings against Cleveland in two regular-season starts. He threw seven shutout innings in a 1-0 victory at Progressive Field on April 28.
His second appearance produced six scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory on July 25.
Martinez allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings against the Yankees in his lone postseason appearance. His postseason ERA stands at 4.91.
Cleveland has not confirmed its Game 4 starter. Vogt could use a bullpen game involving Joey Cantillo, Tanner Bibee or Slade Cecconi.
Friday’s weather could change that arrangement.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Cantillo offers a left-handed option, while Bibee and Cecconi provide length. Vogt could use an opener before turning to a bulk pitcher.
Daniel Espino worked Thursday, potentially affecting his availability. Shawn Armstrong offers another early-inning option after a strong postseason showing.
Vogt must balance flexibility with protecting his bullpen.
Martinez gives Tampa Bay the clearer starting plan, while Cleveland must cover nine innings without a named starter. A postponement could change both rotations.
For now, the Rays have the established starter and Cleveland has several options.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Cleveland Guardians bottom line: Martinez gives Tampa Bay a proven answer against Cleveland’s lineup, but the Guardians’ bullpen depth makes this another demanding postseason pitching matchup.

Rays Guardians ALCS Game 4 Free Pick: Under 6.5
Here is my Rays Guardians free pick: I’m taking Under 6.5 (-110). Tampa Bay needs a response, but this isn’t the spot where I’m expecting either lineup to put on a hitting clinic. Martinez has already shown he can shut Cleveland down, and the Guardians have been making the Rays earn everything.
The strongest angle is Martinez’s ability to work deep without giving away free passes. His previous success against Cleveland makes the early innings particularly important for this total.
Cash needs five or six clean innings before turning to his late-game arms.
Martinez has already blanked Cleveland twice this season, and I’m backing that matchup again with the total at 6.5.
Vogt’s bullpen approach introduces some uncertainty, but Cleveland has the personnel to work through Tampa Bay’s lineup without asking one pitcher to carry the entire assignment. The Guardians can use their left-handed options against the Rays’ power bats, then bring in their late-inning specialists. That’s a legitimate plan for keeping scoring down.
The obvious danger is a pitching change that puts runners aboard, followed by one swing that blows up the total. At 6.5, there isn’t much room for a four-run inning.
I’m not relying on rain or a convenient wind direction to cash this ticket.
Martinez has earned my confidence in this particular matchup, and Cleveland has enough pitching options to answer.
I’m betting the managers stay ahead of the hitters, not the other way around.
My money is on Under 6.5.
